Falcons Finish in Eighth Overall; Rinker Earns All-MAC Second-Team Honors

Sylvania, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team carded a final round of 305, +21, on Saturday to finish the 2016 MAC Men's Golf Championships in eighth-place overall at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio from Apr. 28-30.
The Falcons carded team scores of 303, 300, 295 and 305 over the four round event to place in eighth-place overall with a final 72-hole team score of 1203, +67. BGSU finished ahead of Ohio (1228) in the nine-team field.
Junior Brett Rinker was named to the All-MAC Second-Team for his strong season for the Falcons. Rinker ranked in the top-five of the MAC in season scoring average all season long and was tabbed the MAC Golfer of the Week on Oct. 22, 2015. On the season, he finished runner-up at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate with a 36-hole score of 140, -4 under par, and also placed in a tie for seventh at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational with a score of 213, +3. Rinker finished in a tie for 11th at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate and tied for 14th at the Cleveland State Invitational.
"It was a great tournament that saw championship play at a championship course," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "I think every team enjoyed the experience all weekend, despite some rain on the opening round of play. I want to thank Highland Meadows Golf Club for putting on a great event from the golf course, to the staff and to the hospitality. It was a successful MAC Championships event."
Freshman Pablo Heredia Iglesias recorded a top-15 place finish in his first-ever MAC Championships, taking 12th-place overall with a BGSU low score of 294, +10. Iglesias, who carded two birdies and 12 pars on Saturday, carded rounds of 74, 77, 70 and 73 over the four round event. The Spaniard registered a team-high 10 birdies to go along with 45 pars on the week.
Next on the individual leaderboard for the Falcons was the duo of Rinker and Cameron Michalak who both placed in a tie for 27th overall with matching 72-hole scores of 304, +20. Rinker finished with rounds of 77, 74, 75 and 78 over his four rounds of play, which included six birdies and 42 pars overall. Michalak finished his sophomore season at BGSU with rounds of 82, 71, 72 and 79. He totaled eight birdies and 39 pars over his 72-holes of play.
Rounding out the lineup for the Falcons at the 2016 MAC Championships was Jose Narro and Trey Walker.
Narro turned in rounds of 75, 79, 79 and 75 to place in a 36th overall with a 72-hole score of 308, +24. The junior finished the tournament with five birdies and 44 pars, tallying 11 pars over all four rounds of play.
Walker totaled a 72-hole score of 313, +29, to finish in 41st overall. The freshman finished with rounds of 77, 78, 78 and 80, which included six birdies and 37 pars over his first MAC Championship Tournament.
No. 46 nationally ranked Kent State turned in a final round of 288, +4, on championship Saturday to win the MAC Championship Title by a total of 20 strokes with a 72-hole score of 1152, +16.
Eastern Michigan (1172) finished in second-place, while Miami (Ohio) (1176) had a strong final round of play to claim a third-place team finish.
Individually, Akron's George Baylis finished with a final round 67, -4 under par, to earn medalist honors. Baylis was the lone individual under par for the 72-hole championship event with a score of 283, -1 under par, for the week.
