Seniors Marisa Shook and Molly Holliday and freshman Hannah Giammarino took home awards as the Bowling Green State University softball program held its 2016 banquet on Saturday night (May 7). The event took place inside the Bowen-Thompson Student Union on the BGSU campus.
Shook was named the Falcons' Offensive Player of the Year, while Holliday was voted the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Giammarino took home the Meserve Award, named after Dr. Lee Meserve, BGSU's Faculty Athletics Representative, and his wife, Marge. The Falcons' home field also bears their name.
Shook, a native of Maumee, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), .was one of just two Falcons to start all 54 games in 2016, getting the start in left field in every game. She hit .301 in her senior season and led the Falcons in numerous categories. Shook paced the team in runs scored (32), runs batted in (32), doubles (12), homers (nine), total bases (86), on-base percentage (.391) and slugging pct. (.551), and she tied for the team lead in walks (21). She posted career-best totals in nearly every offensive category in 2016, and in most cases, her '16 totals were higher than those in her first three seasons combined. Shook played in 168 career games at BGSU, making 123 starts, and had 32 extra-base hits, 45 runs scored and 52 RBI. She was one of three finalists for BGSU's Female Senior Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year Award.
Holliday, a native of Bosque Farms, N.M. (Valencia HS), played in 51 games, making 50 starts in center field, in her senior season. She hit .250 on the year, leading the Falcons in stolen bases and ranking second on the team in runs scored. She anchored the Falcons' defense, with three outfield assists and numerous highlight-reel catches in the 2016 campaign. Holliday spent two years at BGSU after attending Weatherford College for two seasons. She played in 99 of BGSU's 102 games during the last years in Northwest Ohio, starting 98. Holliday ended her BG career with a two-year batting average of .300 and totals of 22 stolen bases and 43 runs scored. She had a fielding percentage of .973, with just four errors in nearly 150 total chances, in those two years.
The Meserve Award is presented to the BGSU softball student-athlete who demonstrated the following qualities throughout the season:Â passion, leadership, competitive spirit, 'teamsmanship,' athletic and academic excellence, and resiliency.
Giammarino, a native of Amanda, Ohio (Teays Valley HS), played in 28 games, starting 20, in her freshman campaign. She batted .255 on the season, earning 17 starts in right field and three at shortstop. She scored 10 runs and drove in nine on the season. Giammarino had an auspicious home debut, clubbing a three-run homer to left in her first-ever game at Meserve Field, and she had four multiple-hit games on the year. Giammarino was 2-for-3 with two RBI in a win over Fairfield, and she had two hits and scored three runs agains tMichigan State. She also had multiple-hit games against MAC foes Toledo and Ohio -- going 2-for-2 with a walk in the latter game -- and drove in a pair of runs in a win at Akron.
Head coach Sarah Willis and assistant coaches Brittany Lastrapes, Tiffany Ricks and Kolleen Kopchak handed out various Mid-American Conference and regional awards earned by the student-athletes over the past year, and the coaching staff also presented the team's six seniors with framed jerseys at the banquet. The senior class includes Holliday, Shook, Marina Cobbs, Braiden Dillow, Chandler Scott and Katie Turski.
Additionally, underclass members of the program presented both the seniors and the coaching staff with gifts.
The 2016 BGSU roster featured the six seniors, along with six juniors, one redshirt sophomore, six true sophs and five freshmen.
