Cleveland, Ohio – A pair of Bowling Green State University men's golfers in Jose Narro and Mitchell Kontak were named to the 2016 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Academic All-MAC Team on Thursday, May 19, the league office announced.
It marks the second Academic All-MAC selection for Narro, who also earned recognition last year in 2015, and the first for sophomore Kontak.
To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Teams, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests scheduled or completed in the particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Jose Narro – Junior, Supply Chain Management, 3.453 GPA (3.506 GPA after spring semester)
Named to the Academic All-MAC Team last year as a sophomore, Narro ranked 11th in the MAC and second on the team with a season stroke average of 73.75 over 32 rounds of play on the year. His 2015-16 season stroke average of 73.75 on the year ranks as the 10th best single season stroke average by a Falcon in BGSU men's golf history. The junior, who recorded a head-to-head record of 627-274-37 on the year, set the BGSU men's golf record with a 54-hole score of 202, -11 under par, at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. Narro played in all 11 events for the Falcons on the year at the No. 1 position, carding seven sub-par rounds of golf on the year, including rounds of 66, 67, 68, 68 and 69, and a total of five top-25 place finishes. He took third-place overall at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational with a score of 202, -11 under par and placed in a tie for sixth at the Tucker Intercollegiate with a score of 213, -3 under par. Narro also finished in a tie for 14th at the Cleveland State Invitational. The Falcon co-captain was a counter for the Falcons' team that carded a 54-hole score of 835 at Marshall Invitational, which ranks as the second lowest 54-hole team score in BGSU men's golf history, and also scored in the Falcons' score of 269 in the final round of play at the Marshall Invitational, which made history as the lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU men's golf history. The Tampico, Mexico native helped lead BGSU to two runner-up team finishes this year – at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. As an individual, Narro competed in the 68th annual Azalea Invitational in Mar. – Apr., finishing in a tie for 24th-place overall with a 72-hole score of 286, +2 and represented Mexico at the 2016 Latin America Amateur Championships in January, finishing in 36th-place overall. He most recently carded a round of 67, -5 under par, to take first-place overall at the 2016 U.S. Open Local Qualifier held at the Rattlesnake Ridge Golf Club in Sunbury, Ohio and also shot a round of 69, -2 under par, to place in a tie for fifth-place overall to qualify for the 58 Abierto Mexicano de Golf which will take place on May 19-22 in Aquascalientes, Mexico.
Mitchell Kontak – Sophomore, Finance, 3.372 GPA (3.357 GPA after spring semester)
Named to the Academic All-MAC Team for the first time this year, Kontak played in six tournaments for the Falcons on the season, carding a stroke average of 77.31 over 16 rounds of play on the year. He shot both a BGSU career-low round of 68 and a 54-hole score of 210, -3 under par, at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational to tee-off the season. Overall, he carded two sub-par rounds of golf on the year, including rounds of 68 and 70 at the Marshall Invitational, and recorded two top-25 place finishes. He finished in a tie for second-place at the Rocket Individual Classic and turned in a 16th-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. Kontak was a counter for the Falcons' team that carded a 54-hole score of 835 at Marshall Invitational, which ranks as the second lowest 54-hole team score in BGSU men's golf history, and also scored in the Falcons' score of 269 in the final round of play at the Marshall Invitational, which made history as the lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU men's golf history.
