BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team dropped its Mid-American Conference opener, 3-0, to Miami University Thursday (Sept. 22) night at the Stroh Center. The RedHawks won the match by a score of 26-24; 25-22; 25-22.
"It's disappointing, of course, to start conference play with a loss at home," said head coach Danijela Tomic. "We knew that it was going to be a really hard match against Miami. They were on a seven-match winning streak like us, too. They are a very good team. We knew that we would need to play a very high level of volleyball.
"I have to give credit to Miami. They executed their game plan, and they made it difficult for us to be ourselves, and to do what we do well. First off, they won the serve and serve receive game…It's not how we wanted to start the conference, but I told the team that we lost the battle -- we did not lose the war. This is the first match of the season. We will meet Miami again at the end, and hopefully in the MAC Tournament."Â

The loss snaps Bowling Green's seven-match winning streak, and drops the Falcons to 10-4 (0-1 MAC) on the season. A total of 847 Falcon fans were in attendance for the program's annual "Dollar Day."
Bowling Green had its opportunities, but the RedHawks made plays late in each set to take control of the match. The Falcons led the opening set, 23-22, had the second set tied at 22-22, and battled back late in the third set to trail by just two points at 24-22, but the Falcons couldn't cash in.
Madeline Garda entered the match leading the nation in digs per set at 6.50, and bumped up her average to 6.57 on the season by registering 23 digs (7.67 digs/set). Garda, who also leads the nation in total digs with 323, notched her 300th dig of the season in the match.
Jelena Sunjic and Alyssa Maloney led the way for the Falcons offensively. Sunjic picked up 15 kills and hit .293 (15-3-41), while Maloney hit .500 (13-3-20) with 13 kills. Maloney also tallied seven digs. Isabel Kovacic racked up six kills, and Madeline Brandewie followed with five.
Jessi Holly contributed with three kills and five digs, and Nicole Slimko, who continues to work her way back from injuries, came on late in the third set and posted two kills on three attempts.
Kallie Seimet totaled seven digs, while Delaney Arkeilpane had four digs. Katie Scholten nearly picked up her second double-double of the season, as she recorded 39 assists and nine digs. She also had five kills and hit .556 (5-0-9).
The Falcons will hit the road to face Northern Illinois on Saturday (Sept. 22) at 8 p.m. The Orange and Brown will then return to the Stroh Center next week for matches against Ohio on Sept. 30 and Kent State on Oct. 1.
After playing three of its first matches in Bowling Green, the Falcons will play four-consecutive matches on the road, starting with matches at Akron (Oct. 7) and Buffalo (Oct. 8), before rounding things off with trips to Eastern Michigan (Oct. 14) and Central Michigan (Oct. 15).Â
