November 19, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Second-half shooting struggles prove too much for BG to overcome
A cold-shooting second half proved to be too much for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to overcome on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19), as visiting Canisius College rallied for a 71-57 win over the Falcons at the Stroh Center.
Junior Sydney Lambert led the Brown and Orange with 12 points, while sophomores Jane Uecker and Andrea Cecil scored 10 and nine points, respectively.
Sara Hinriksdottir led three Golden Griffins in double figures with a game-high 20 points.

FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Andrea Cecil knocked down a three-point try from the left wing on BG's first possession, before the visitors scored the next five points.
- Cecil fed fellow soph Jane Uecker for a layup, however, and after Sara Hinriksdottir answered with a bucket, junior Carly Santoro took a pass from classmate Sydney Lambert and drilled a three-pointer from the right side. Then, Lambert hit a corner three off senior Haley Puk's feed, and BGSU's lead was 11-7.
- The Golden Griffins scored the next three points before Santoro lobbed the ball inside to freshman Sierra Thompson for a bucket. Thompson then got to the line on BG's next possession, knocking down both shots for a 15-10 lead with 2:24 on the clock.
- Maria Welch heated up for the Griffs, draining two three-point shots just over 45 seconds apart, but Thompson drew a foul on Welch, went back to the line and hit two more tosses with 31.0 seconds to go, giving the Orange and Brown a 17-16 lead after one quarter.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Uecker got to the line just 15 seconds into the quarter, going 2-for-2, and the sophomore then scored inside after a Cecil steal, giving the hosts a 21-16 lead.
- Hinriksdottir canned a jumper, but Lambert rebounded her own miss and laid the ball back up and in. Moments later, the junior point guard fed Puk for a right-wing triple and a 26-20 BG lead.
- The visitors, however, scored for the third-straight possession, as Sarah Cooley's long-range shot cut BG's lead in half and the Falcons used a timeout at the 7:17 mark.
- Santoro hit a nifty driving layup out of the timeout, and Uecker matched the junior with a nice layup of her own, giving BG a 30-23 lead. After Shannon Conely scored inside, Lambert stepped outside and hit a triple try, making it an eight-point game.
- Conely scored inside again, and the teams then played nearly two minutes of scoreless ball before Cecil completed an epic stretch of rebounding with an and-one layup. After the Falcons did not score on the prior possession, despite a pair of offensive boards, Cecil rebounded not one, but two teammates' missed shots on the next trip down the floor, laying the ball back up and in after the second. Her free throw gave the Falcons a 36-27 lead, BG's largest of the game, with 1:42 left before the half.
- Canisius answered with a quick 8-0 run. Margret Halfdanardottir hit a three, Anndea Zeigler converted a three-point play and Conely made a layup after a Halfdanardottir steal. The latter bucket cut BG's lead to a single point.
- But, after a missed layup late in the period, sophomore Caterrion Thompson rebounded the ball in traffic and fired it to Cecil. Cecil's quick pass found an open Rachel Myers at the top of the arc, and the senior's three-point try found nothing but net as the horn sounded. The Falcons led, 39-35, at the break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- The Golden Griffins began the third quarter by scoring the first 12 points, taking the lead for good. Hinriksdottir opened the second-half scoring with a three-ball, the first of three triples in the span of less than two minutes for the visitors. Cooley's long-distance effort made it a 46-39 game three minutes into the period.
- The Falcons' first point of the quarter came with 4:19 on the clock, as Cecil split a pair of free throws, and BG's first field goal of the period came with nearly seven minutes gone, as Cecil hit a jumper in the paint at the 3:02 mark. That cut BG's deficit to seven points, at 49-42.
- A Santoro layup in the final minute of the period made it a six-point game, before two Welch free throws gave the Griffs a 54-46 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Puk opened the quarter with a jumper, before the visitors hit a pair of shots to increase BG's deficit to 10 points.
- Myers, however, knocked down her second three-pointer of the game with exactly eight minutes to go. But, the visitors would score the next six points, and the BG deficit grew to 13 before Sierra Thompson hit a pair of charity tosses midway through the period.
- Hinriksdottir answered with a jumper, and although the Falcon defense got stops on each of the next four CC possessions, BG could not cut into the lead until just 2:13 remained. Lambert hit a layup to cut the Griffs' lead to 66-55.
- BG's pressure forced Anna Sweny into a wild pass as she was triple-teamed in her own end. Lambert jumped the route, intercepted the ball, headed straight down Main Street and laid the ball up and in with 2:04 to go.
- After Canisius advanced the ball over halfcourt on the next possession, more pressure defense by the Falcons forced the Griffins to use a timeout with 1:57 remaining.
- But, from there, the Falcons could get no closer. CC successfully inbounded the ball, the Falcons were forced to foul and the visitors hit five free throws over the remainder of the game to conclude the scoring.
