Falcons' Magical Run Ends in Overtime of MAC Championship Game

KENT, Ohio -- The most successful Bowling Green State University women's soccer season in ten years came to a close on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 5) with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Toledo Rockets in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship. The Falcons overcame a second-half deficit to send the game into extra time, but Toledo managed a goal with just five seconds remaining in the first overtime. BGSU's season ends with a record of 13-7-1 and a winning percentage of .643. Both marks are second-best in school history, surpassed only by the 2005 squad (14-7-2; .652).
Toledo controlled much of the action in the first half but managed only six shots and two shots on goal, both saved by Falcon goalkeeper Victoria Cope (12-7-1). The Falcons took one shot at Toledo's Madison Perrin (12-7-3), and she also made the save to keep the game scorelsss at the break.
BGSU fell behind in the 59th minute when Regan Price corralled a long cross from the right sideline and fed Sophie Pohl for a 1-0 lead. Bowling Green fought valiantly over the next 20 minutes to even the game, and their work finally paid off in the 79th minute. Maureen Kennedy took a pass just behind the midfield stripe and dribbled up the left side. She played a long ball from 45 yards out to Erica Hubert, who had inside position on her defender 15 yards from the net. Hubert turned the the left and fired a shot past Perrin for the equalizer with just 11:41 left in regulation.
The Falcons were able to work the ball into their attacking third several times in the overtime but could not manage a shot. Toledo was able to take four, but the first three were off the mark. The final shot came inside the final ten seconds, and Pohl's floater from 20 yards out went over the top for the game-winner with five seconds left.
