February 06, 2017 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's basketball player Zack Denny and women's basketball player Carly Santoro.
Male Athlete of the Week
Zack Denny, a senior from Germantown, Ohio, led Bowling Green to a 2-0 week by averaging 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.0 assist. Denny shot 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from the field, and a lethal 60.0 percent from downtown. He scored in double figures for the 49th and 50th times of his career. Denny started off the week by scoring 10 points and pulling down four rebounds in an 83-72 win over Miami (Jan. 31). Over the weekend, the senior played his best game as a Falcon, as he led BGSU to its first win over arch-rival Toledo in nearly five years. Denny scored a career-high 30 points, while also adding seven rebounds, six steals, and one assist. He went 8-for-11 from the field, and a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range.Â
Female Athlete of the Week
Carly Santoro, a sophomore from Bellevue, Ohio, led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding as BGSU posted a 36-point win in the team's lone game of the week. Santoro led the Falcons in both points and rebounds for the third-straight game, with 16 points and six boards in an 86-50 win over Akron at the Stroh Center.
