Pohlkamp, East Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
March 06, 2017 | General, Ice Hockey, Gymnastics
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Matt Pohlkamp and gymnast Jovannah East.
Male Athlete of the Week
Matt Pohlkamp, a senior from Baxter, Minn., posted six points in BGSU Hockey's first round sweep of Ferris State Friday and Sunday, picking up four points in a 6-1 win Friday and two more in the clinching 5-3 victory Saturday. Friday, he opened the scoring with a goal and then added a second just 2:58 into the second period to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead. He assisted on a goal 52 seconds later and then added another assist later in the period. Saturday, he assisted on the opening goal to put the Falcons ahead 1-0 and then added an assist on the empty-netter that clinched the win with 34 seconds remaining. The six-point series is the most in a playoff series for a Falcon since Dan DeSalvo had seven against Ferris State in 2011-12.
Female Athlete of the Week
Jovannah East, a freshman from Zion, Ill., finished first in three of her six events this weekend, including a pair of 9.875s on vault and a 9.850 Sunday on the beam. She anchored the vault lineup Sunday against Michigan State, posting a 49.075, which is the team's best event score of 2017. East has now scored 9.800 or better in 20 straight events and has a 9.875 in three consecutive meets on vault. She ranks ninth in the Central Region in the vault, currently in a strong position to make NCAA Regionals as an individual.
