Carey, Hinkle Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
April 03, 2017 | Baseball, General, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Zac Carey and softball player Katee Hinkle.
Male Athlete of the Week
Zac Carey, a junior from London, Ohio, hurled a complete game on Saturday at Northern Illinois to secure the Falcons a series win and doubleheader sweep. Carey surrendered just one run, and it was unearned, while tying his career high in strikeouts with six. The righty allowed six hits, and walked just one batter. Carey retired 15 consecutive batters in the game, and with two outs in the eighth inning, was one out away from recording five-straight perfect innings.
Female Athlete of the Week
Katee Hinkle, a junior from Taylor, Mo., hit a team-leading .625 as the Falcons scored 19 runs in three games last week. Hinkle had five hits in eight at-bats, with an on-base percentage of .700 and a slugging pct. of .750 as BG averaged 6.33 runs per game in a road series against MAC West Division favorite Northern Illinois. Hinkle reached base twice in three trips in the opening game, as she walked, was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Then, in the second game of the series, Hinkle was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and one RBI as the Falcons downed the Huskies, 11-5. She had a hit in the final game in DeKalb, and raised her seasonal batting average 52 points in the three games, and was perfect in 13 chances in the field.
