INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team fell for the first time in 2017 as they were defeated 2-0 by the Butler Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 27). The game was held at Butler's Sellick Bowl.
The Falcons were able to generate nine shots, but only two of them were on goal. Butler's Hannah Luedtke stopped one shot in the first half, while Leonie Doege took over for the final 45 minutes and also halted one BGSU effort. Victoria Cope once again played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons and kept the Bulldogs scoreless for 72 minutes. However, two goals in a three-minute span sealed the win for Butler.
COACH SAYS…
BGSU head coach Matt Fannon said, "We are disappointed with the result, which in itself says a lot about our team's intentions. We had chances to win this game. In the end, the long weekend, with one fewer day of rest than Butler, caught up with us."
STRONG DEFENSE
BGSU goalkeeper Victoria Cope has only played three career games, but she has already produced one of the longer shutout minutes streaks in BGSU history. Cope allowed a goal at the 37:30 mark of the opening contest at Oakland. After that, she did not allow a goal for 214:58, until Butler scored at the 72:28 mark of Sunday's contest. Cope has allowed three goals on ten shots in 270 minutes so far in 2017 for a 1.00 goals against average and a .700 save percentage.
STAT FILES
Senior Madison Schupbach took four shots at Butler and had one of the Falcons' two shots on goal. It was her first SOG of the season. Redshirt junior Erica Hubert attempted three shots and the other shot on goal. She is now second on the team with 11 total shots and five shots on goal in 2017.
