1967-68 BGSU Men’s Basketball: A Season To Remember
January 10, 2018 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- On Jan. 20, when the BGSU men's basketball team takes on Central Michigan at the Stroh Center at 3:30 p.m., the program will honor the 1967-68 team, as members of the team and coaching staff return to campus. This season marks the 50-year anniversary of the team's MAC Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Below is more information on the team's memorable season.
The Falcons were led by head coach Bill Fitch, his one lone season on the BGSU bench, as Fitch would depart for Minnesota after the season and eventually go on to an almost 30-year NBA career.
While every basketball team is a collective team effort, the 1967-68 team had a particular standout, forward Walt Piatkowski. Piatkowski averaged 24 points per game and just over seven rebounds per game during the 1967-68 season. Piakowski was stellar all three years he was at BGSU, and had a brief professional career in the American Basketball Association for four years.
Al Hairston, Al Dixon and Dick Rodgers were also statistical standouts for the 1967-68 team. The Mid-American Conference did not hold a conference tournament until the 1979-80 season, so the Falcons advanced to the NCAA Tournament after going 10-2 in the MAC and winning the MAC for at the time, the fifth time in program history.
The Falcons went 18-7 overall, splitting games with rival Toledo during the season. Perhaps the most notable non-conference games of the year included playing at Iowa and at Virginia Tech, but also beating DePaul, Syracuse and Virginia.
In the NCAA Tournament, the Falcons fell by just one point against Marquette, 72-71. Piatkowski led the Falcons with 27 points and Hairston also chipped in 18 points.
