1967-68 BGSU Men's Basketball: Standout Walt Piatkowski
January 14, 2018 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- On Jan. 20, when the BGSU men's basketball team takes on Central Michigan at the Stroh Center at 3:30 p.m., the program will honor the 1967-68 team, as members of the team and coaching staff return to campus. This season marks the 50-year anniversary of the team's MAC Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament.Â
The 1967-68 BGSU men's basketball team was undoubtedly built upon a team effort, but like nearly every championship-level team, one player usually sticks out above the rest. For the 67-68 Falcons, that player was Walt Piatkowski.
Â
Piatkowski was born in Toledo, Ohio and would go on to play his high school ball at Woodward High School. Piatkowski quickly grasped the college game, as during his first season, he averaged 18.4 points per game, playing 24 games during that 1965-66 season.
Â
The 1967-68 season, however, was Piatkowski's best collegiate season in terms of points per game and field goal percentage, as he averaged 24.0 points per game on 52.0 percent shooting. Piatkowski was the leading scorer for not only the 1967-68 team, but also the two previous seasons, as well.

Â
On March 9, 1968, during the first round NCAA Tournament matchup versus Marquette, Piatkowski scored 27 points as the Falcons fell one-point shy in a 72-71 defeat to the Golden Eagles.
Â
Piatkowski's name is scattered all around the record book at BGSU. Most notably, he sits seventh all-time in scoring at 1,577 points, and third all-time in career scoring average at 21.6.
Â
After his career at BGSU, Piatkowski was drafted in the eighth round of the 1968 NBA Draft. He went on to play 157 games in the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the Denver Rockets and The Floridians, where he would average 9.3 points per game.
Â
Walt's son, Eric, would go on to play college basketball at the University of Nebraska, later becoming the 15th overall selection in the 1994 NBA Draft. Eric played six years in the NBA, totaling 789 games.
