CHARLIE MAGIC! Maciejewski's Last-Second Goal Lifts Falcons to OT Win at IUPUI
October 09, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Junior scores with 3.5 seconds on the clock
Charlie Maciejewski scored with just 3.5 seconds on the clock, lifting the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team to a 3-2 overtime win over IUPUI Tuesday night (Oct. 9). The non-conference match was held at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.
After BGSU (3-5-3) won a throw-in with under 20 seconds remaining, sophomore Vinny Worner threw the ball to freshman Jensen Lukacsko on the right side of the field. Lukacsko quickly found Maciejewski, who took the ball toward the end line, then made a nifty spin move to get around his defender. Maciejewski brought the ball into the box from the right side, and from approximately 10 yards out, the junior blasted a shot into the roof of the net, giving the Falcons the win and sparking a wild celebration.
Sophomore Chris Sullivan and senior Tate Robertson also scored in the win, with Robertson picking up the primary assist on Sullivan's goal.
The Falcons had advantages of 19-10 in total shot attempts, 8-3 in shots on goal and 10-3 in corner kicks. BGSU outshot the Jaguars in every period, including a 4-0 margin in the overtime.
Each team was awarded two penalty kicks in the match, and both of the Jags' goals came from the spot. IUPUI goalkeeper Quinn McCallion stopped the Falcons' second PK of the match in overtime, setting the stage for Maciejewski's 11th-hour heroics.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 4' | BGSU won a corner kick, and senior Tate Robertson's kick sailed over the outstretched arms of IUPUI 'keeper Quinn McCallion as he came off of his line. But, the ball was headed by a Jags defender and caromed directly to McCallion, who grabbed it.
• 12' | Sophomore Chris Sullivan hit a shot from the top of the box, and the ball was blocked out for another BG corner, Off of Robertson's kick, junior Chris Brennan attempted a backheel pass to a teammate in the box, but the IUPUI 'keeper was able to gather the ball in.
• 18 | The Jaguars had a solid scoring chance off of a left-side cross, but a shot by Anthony Saporito was blocked by a BG defender for a 'team save,' and a follow-up try sailed high.
• 20' | Senior Moe Mustafa got his head on a long throw-in, but the ball was hit directly at McCallion, who plucked it out of the air.
• 22' | GOAL | Alan Aguilar gave the Jaguars the lead on a penalty kick, after a Jaguar went to the ground on a serve into the penalty area.
• 25' | IUPUI's Saporito brought the ball from right to left across the top of the 18 and hit a hard shot that sailed well over the goal.
• 29' | Sullivan took a pass from fellow sophomore Zach Buescher and made a nifty run into the box. His shot, however, was blocked, and the ball popped up into the air and floated directly to the 'keeper.
• 35' | Mustafa's long ball forward was just out of reach of freshman Matt Walters, and McCallion gathered it in on the bounce.
• 36' | Sullivan hit a turnaround shot from diatance, forcing the 'keeper into a save, as McCallion tipped the ball wide and it rolled out of play on the turf.
• 42' | Junior Tom Wrobel hit a diagonal ball into the box from the right side. The ball was headed back across the box by Mustafa, but junior Charlie Maciejewski's resulting shot sailed over the goal.
• 43' | Maciejewski's right-side serve was headed by a leaping Ebenezer Ackon, but the senior's shot went over the bar.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 46' | Robertson won a corner in the first minute of the second half, and his kick found the head of Achille Robin, but the shot was wide right.
• 48' | Nick Anderson hit a low, dangerous-looking shot/cross from the left side, but junior goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia made a diving effort in traffic and came up with the ball.
• 55' | Junior Vinny Worner won a corner kick, and the Falcons worked a combination play off of that corner. Robertson and freshmen Jensen Lukacsko were involved in the play, and Robertson took the return pass and found Sulliven on the right side. But, Sullivan's cross was knocked out of play.
• 61' | Mustafa was fouled just outside the 18-yard box, but Brennan's ensuing free kick was blocked by the IUPUI wall.
• 64' | GOAL | Walters took the ball across the top of the box, and was challenged near the center of the field. He maintained possession of the ball, and slid a pass through the defense to Robertson on the left side. Robertson drew McCallion toward him and slid a square pass to a wide-open Sullivan, and Sullivan tapped the ball into the empty net.
• 70' | GOAL | The Falcons took the lead with 20:43 to go. Robertson lofted a free kick into the box, and Mustafa was dumped as he went for the ball. A PK was awarded, and Robertson converted the shot to give BG a 2-1 advantage.
• 70' | GOAL | Only 16 seconds after the goal, a long ball toward the other end of the field resulted in a foul being called on the Falcons on the left side of the box. Aguilar stepped to the spot for the second time on the night and knocked the PK home to knot the score.
• 80' | Maciejewski made a nifty run into the box, splitting a pair of defenders, taking the ball toward the end line and winning a corner. But, that kick was grabbed by a leaping McCallion.
• 90' | BG pressured for much of the final 10 minutes, but the Falcons could not find the tiebreaking goal. In the final minute of regulation, Worner's shot was off the mark after he wound up with the ball following Robertson's long throw-in.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 92' | Senior Peter Pugliese won the Falcons' 10th corner kick of the night, but that Robertson kick was headed out of the box just before Mustafa could get to it.
• 93' | The Falcons were awarded a PK as Ackon was fouled in the box, but McCallion made a diving stop of Robertson's shot and did not give up a rebound.
• 94' | BGSU continued to apply pressure, not letting the Jaguars clear the ball out of their own end. Buescher and Lukacsko combined for a steal, and Lukacsko found Sullivan, but his curving shot from distance did not curve quite enough to find the upper-right-hand-corner of the net.
• 99' | With just over a minute on the clock, the Jaguars won a corner. As Saporito took his time trotting over to the corner, the referee stopped the clock. BG successfully defended the corner, as the ball found an IUPUI striker's head, but bounced in the box and Mwembia jumped over a Jaguar player to grab it.
• 100' | GOAL | BGSU headed the other way, and won a throw-in just over midfield, near the IUPUI bench. Worner took the throw-in, finding Lukacsko and beginning the sequence of events that led to the Maciejewski golazo.
