Ackon, a native of Cape Coast, Ghana (Mfantsipim School), was one of the top BGSU performers at both ends of the pitch in 2018. One of three Falcons named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team, he played in 14 of the team's 17 matches, making 12 starts, and finished second on the squad with 11 points.
Ackon led the Falcons with five goals on the year, and picked up his first career game-winning goal in the final regular-season match (Nov. 3), as the Brown and Orange posted a 2-0 win over SIUE. Ackon led the team with three goals and an assist in the team's five MAC regular-season matches, and was a mainstay on the BG back line.
He scored a pair of goals just 75 seconds apart in the Falcons' season opener vs. Northern Kentucky, and scored the first goal of the match in BGSU's road win over Northern Illinois. He had an assist on Vinny Worner's 80th-minute goal in the Falcons' regular-season matchup vs. Western Michigan. And, the senior converted a second-half penalty kick at West Virginia.
Ackon's goal vs. SIUE, on Senior Night at Cochrane Stadium, came just 13 seconds before halftime, and proved to be the winner. Ackon was part of a BG back line that allowed the Cougars just one shot on goal. For his efforts in that win, Ackon was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week on Nov. 5.
In addition to the SIUE match, Ackon helped the BG back line keep clean sheets over 110 minutes against both Wright State, a team that was ranked in the top-25 for several weeks this season, and Akron, a team that has advanced to the NCAA College Cup. The Brown and Orange also blanked Cincinnati on the road
BGSU closed the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-7-4, and the Falcons posted a 2-1-2 mark in MAC play. BG, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney. The Falcons have finished second in the league twice in the last three seasons. BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
The complete USC All-North Region Team can be found below, or by clicking the link near the top of this page. All four teams that have advanced to the NCAA College Cup are from the North Region.
