Falcons Maintain Position After Day Three of MAC Champonships

ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team remained steady in fifth place after the third day of the 2018 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. On Friday (Feb. 23), six Falcons qualified for championship rounds during the morning preliminaries, and 13 different athletes combined to establish 14 new personal records. Five individual swimming events were held on Friday, as well as the championship in the 400 medley relay. Divers competed in the preliminary and consolation rounds of three-meter diving. The four-day meet concludes tomorrow.

The Falcons' best event on Friday was the 100-yard backstroke. Five Falcons qualified for the evening session and earned points, and a sixth missed qualifying by just 0.3 seconds. Lauren Sullivan reached the championship final and placed eighth. Elodie Schreiber won the consolation race, as BGSU swimmers took four of the top six spots in that heat.
Sarah Hennings was a point-scorer for the Falcons in the 100 backstroke and set a personal record, but her most impressive feat of the day was a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. She earned a second personal record by completing the race in 54.82, just 0.15 seconds shy of the school record.
Other Falcons to race for a title included Franziska Wohlert, who swam in the championship of the 200-yard freestyle and set a personal record of 1:49.41, which earned sixth place. Nikki Borgerding took seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke, and her time in the prelims (1:02.45) was the fourth-fastest in BGSU history. BGSU divers also joined in the fun, as Talisa Lemke (2nd, 314.00) and Claire Stam (6th, 283.55) earned spots in the three-meter diving final.
The MAC Championships conclude on Saturday (Feb. 24) with a daytime and evening session. Swimmers will compete in the 200-yard backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, the 100- and 1650-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle relay. In addition, the top eight divers from Friday's three-meter preliminaries will square off in the championship final.
HEAD COACH MATT ENSE SAYS…
"We had another great day of racing and competing on the boards. We are getting better as the meet goes on, and tomorrow should be another strong day. We have two divers in the top eight tomorrow in the three-meter dive, and that gets us off to a great start."

200 BACKSTROKE PREVIEW
- Bowling Green will have five point scorers in the 100 backstroke and seek to repeat that on Saturday in the 200.
- Franziska Wohlert (1:59.68) and Maria Galic (2:00.91) are championship final contenders. Elodie Schreiber is currently 14th (2:02.02) in the MAC but has a sub-2:00 PR.
- Lauren Sullivan (16th, 2:02.42) and Jordan Andrusak (22nd, 2:04.09) are also point contenders.
- The Falcons will attempt to shave time and move into points contention. Entering the meet, BGSU has two in the MAC's top 25.
- Jordan Andrusak is 22nd with a seed time of 51.61. Maria Galic's best time (51.74) is good for 25th.
- Jordan Andrusak (7th, 2:16.53) and Nikki Borgerding (9th, 2:17.92) are both in the MAC's top ten. Both seed times are in the top ten in team history.
- Emily Verbrugge is also a points contender, ranking 19th in the MAC (2:21.02).
- Sarah Hennings is the lone Falcon in the top 25 of the MAC in this event.
- However, she ranks sixth in the MAC and fourth in team history with a seed time of 2:01.71.
- She set that mark by winning the 200 butterfly three weeks ago against Toledo.
- BGSU has four swimmers in the MAC's top 25 this season, including Mary Edwards (17:21.68), Maddy Andrews (17:29.26), and Caroline Neely (17:34.20).
- Natalie Criswell ranks 12th (17:01.75); she is the BGSU record holder (16:31.89), a mark established at last year's MACs.
- Two Falcons will dive in Saturday's championship final. Talisa Lemke and Claire Stam both earned top-8 spots in the prelims.
- Talisa Lemke finished second (314.00); her seed score entering the meet was 336.15.
- Claire Stam posted a personal-record 283.55 to earn sixth place in the prelims.
- BGSU's seed time (3:24.09) is fourth in the MAC and the fifth-best 400 free relay time in team history.
- That seed time was established by Jordan Andrusak, Franziska Wohlert, Maddy Andrews, and Maria Galic earlier this month in a win over Toledo.
