Wiggins And Turner Garner All-MAC Honors
March 05, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior forward Demajeo Wiggins and redshirt-freshman guard Justin Turner, members of the BGSU men's basketball team, earned All-Conference honors, the Mid-American Conference office announced Monday (March 5) afternoon.
Wiggins was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Turner was placed on the All-MAC Freshman Team, while also earning All-MAC Honorable Mention honors.
Wiggins becomes the program's 35th All-MAC Second Team selection, and first since A'uston Calhoun earned the recognition in 2012-13. Turner is the 11th Falcon to be named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team, and first since Dylan Frye in 2016-17. Prior to Turner, Spence Parker (2015-16) was the last Falcon to bring home All-MAC Honorable Mention honors.
Wiggins enters tonight's game at Central Michigan having posted a double-double in seven-consecutive games. Wiggins, who registered six double-doubles all of last season, has posted 16 double-doubles in 2017-18. He is one of two players in the MAC that's averaging a double-double on the season, as he's averaging 14.1 points and 10.1 rebounds.
"My staff, team and I couldn't be more proud of Demajeo for earning Second Team All-MAC. He has come a long way since his freshman year and has worked hard to get to this point in his career," said head coach Michael Huger. "When you work hard, good things happen and Demajeo is a great example of that. He found a way to impact every game, whether it be through scoring, rebounding or knocking down big foul shots, and this is a much-deserved honor. I believe he is a young man who is loaded with potential and this is just the beginning of him scratching that surface."
On the season, the junior has notched 302 rebounds – the most from a Falcon since Cornelius Cash posted 350 in 1974-75. In MAC play, Wiggins is averaging 15.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, while shooting 60.3 percent from the field. His scoring average ranks 12th-best in the MAC. He sits second in rebounding and fourth in field goal percentage. He's the only player in the MAC that ranks in the top 12 in scoring, while also sitting top five in rebounding and field goal percentage.
Turner has turned in arguably the best freshman season in program history. He broke the freshman single-season scoring record at BGSU on Feb. 24. Turner broke current assistant coach and Falcon legend Anthony Stacey's record. Stacey scored 433 points as a freshman in 1995-96. Turner has now scored 475 points in 2017-18.
"I am extremely proud of Justin Turner for being named to the Honorable Mention All-MAC, and All-MAC Freshman teams. Justin is a special player who plays hard every practice and every game," commented Huger. "While still a freshman, he plays with a poise and composure that is well beyond his years. While he had a terrific season on the offensive end of the court, he was even more impressive defensively as he guarded some of the top players on each opposing team. Justin is one of the hardest workers I've ever coached and has a future that is filled with promise. This is just the beginning for this special young man."
The Detroit native leads all MAC freshmen in scoring, as he's averaging 15.8 points. That figure ranks 10th overall in the league. He also leads the MAC's entire freshmen class in steals (1.5 SPG) and free throw shooting (81.5 percent). In the season opener, Turner scored a BGSU freshman record of 33 points at Drexel. In another 30-point performance, he dropped 30 points at Akron. He's scored in double figures a total of 24 times in 2017-18, while scoring at least 20 points in 10 games.
