Statistical Standouts
- The Falcons first point came from sophomore Marharita-Sophia Tavpash when she downed her Eastern Michigan opponent in straight sets at No. 3 singles, including a 6-0 shutout in the second for the point. On the season, Tavpash now holds a 12-6 record against her opponents.
- Now on a three-match win streak, junior Vanesa Pardo battled for her straight set wins at No. 5 singles by a win of 6-3, 7-5.
- One of the Falcons three straight set singles wins also came from sophomore Ayumi Sasaki at the No. 4 slot. After shutting out her opponent in the first set 6-0, the Montreal, Quebec native sealed the win to put the Falcons up 3-2 with a 6-4 victory in the second set.
- To claim the match with the Falcons fourth point was junior Paula Comella, who now posts a record of 16-5 on the season at No. 1 singles. A native of Ciutadella de Menorca, Spain, Comella quickly rebounded from a first set loss to force a third with a second set win of 6-4, and helped the Falcons come out victorious with a third set win of 7-6 (7-3).
Coach Dalmacio's Take
- "Today we really showed perseverance, after not starting well in doubles. The energy wasn't there in the beginning and I think a bit of that was nerves. I think the team was feeling the pressure a bit, but they didn't quit and wanted to be in the second round of the tournament. They fought on every single court and it's a good day."
- "From the start of this season it's been a hard fought battle, and the team has had that attitude every time they've stepped out on the court. There's definitely a sense of fulfillment right now in today's win, but we also know we're not done yet and that there's still two days to go. We still hope to be back here again on Sunday afternoon."
