Huger, Men’s Basketball Inks Tayler Mattos To NLI
May 09, 2018 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team and head coach Michael Huger have announced the signing of Tayler Mattos (New London, New Hampshire / Kearsarge Regional High School) on Wednesday (May 9) to a National Letter of Intent.
Mattos, a 6-10 post player, is a native of New London, New Hampshire. Mattos will be a true freshman on the 2018-19 team. He will have four years of eligibility for the Orange and Brown.
"I am excited about the addition of Tayler Mattos to our roster. Tayler is coming to us after a standout high school career at Kearsarge Regional High School, and he will give us another dynamic option at the center position," said head coach Michael Huger. "With an athletic 6-10, 235-pound frame, Tayler has terrific length, size and mobility. He has a well-rounded skill set in the post, and can extend all the way to the three-point line. While he is young for his grade, my staff and I believe Tayler's best basketball is ahead of him, and we feel that he will develop into a special player at Bowling Green."
Rated as the No. 16 player in the state of New Hampshire's 2018 class by NewEnglandRecruitingReport.com, Mattos led the Cougars to a pair of State Championship Game appearances over his four years at Kearsarge. In 2016-17, as a junior, the Cougars defeated Stevens High by a score of 51-46 on March 11, 2017 to capture the state title.
Mattos had a pair of monster performances to secure the championship. In the semifinal win over Somersworth, Mattos posted 32 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks, before racking up 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks in the championship game.
Mattos was named New Hampshire's Division III Player of the Year that season, as he averaged 26.0 points, 14.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks. Kearsarge then moved up divisions prior to Mattos' senior season, and, amazingly enough, he was named New Hampshire's Division II Player of the Year this past season in 2017-18. As a senior, the big man averaged 25.6 points, 13.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.8 blocks.
The Cougars of Kearsarge played in the state title game during Mattos' sophomore season, as well. With his older brother Zach on the team, Tayler averaged 15.3 points and 9.0 rebounds that season. Mattos is the son of Gary Mattos and Tanya Hathaway. He plans to major in sport management at BGSU.
