Doege, who hails from Lubbock, Texas, is projected as the Falcons' starting quarterback after posting one of the two greatest statistical seasons by a true freshman quarterback in program history a year ago. He started five games and threw for at least 250 yards four times. He had a season-high 294 yards passing at Buffalo and threw four touchdown passes against rival Toledo. Over the final four games of the season, he threw 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Doege's 63.8 percent completion percentage is the eighth-best single season in school history.
Doege is the only player in the Mid-American Conference on the 47-member Watch List and one of 10 quarterbacks. The Watch List will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and to five finalists in December. The finalists will attend The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet on Jan. 9, 2019. Two finalists for the award, Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts and Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham, are again on the Watch List.
Earl Campbell graduated from John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas before joining the Texas Longhorns. As a senior, Campbell rushed for 1,744 yards and 19 touchdowns, winning the Heisman Trophy. He was subsequently drafted by the Houston Oilers where he won Rookie of the Year honors in 1978 and went on to lead the NFL in rushing three times. Campbell earned NFL MVP in 1979 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
