Liz Honegger To Be Inducted Into Athletics Hall Of Fame

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department will induct the 52nd class into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 21 at the Stroh Center. A reception, with light appetizers, will take place at 6:15 pm, with the induction ceremony beginning at 7:15 pm. Tickets are available for $15 for Falcon Club members or $30 for the general public. Over the course of the five weeks leading up to the Hall of Fame induction, we will introduce you to each of the five inductees. Our second inductee in the Class of 2018 is Liz Honegger.

Honegger, a native of Lafayette, Ind., finished her playing career as one of the most decorated players in BGSU women's basketball history. During her four years, the Falcons went 103-25 (.805) overall. BGSU advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament's championship game in all four of her seasons, and BGSU won both the MAC regular-season and tournament titles in each of the last three years.

Honegger's senior season saw the Falcons go 31-4 overall – still the most wins in MAC women's basketball history. The last two wins were NCAA Tournament victories over Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt to lead the Falcons to the first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance by a MAC women's team. Honegger started a school-record (since broken) 127 of 128 games at Bowling Green, as she was in the starting lineup for every contest of her career except the first one.

Honegger also finished her college career as the school's record holder in three-point field goals made (216) and blocked shots (188). Upon her graduation, she was the only player in NCAA Division I women's basketball to hold both of those career records for her school.

Entering the 2018-19 season, Honegger still holds the school records for blocked shots in a game, season and career. She currently ranks seventh in scoring (1,522 points), fourth in rebounding (903), seventh in steals (202) and third in three-pointers made. She was twice named to the All-MAC Second-Team, was a two-time MAC All-Tournament Team selection and also earned Academic All-MAC distinction.

Honegger was the only player in BGSU history to make 40 triples and block 40 shots in the same season, and she did so twice. In fact, she surpassed the 50 mark in both categories in both years.
Following her freshman season on the hardwood, Honegger joined the BGSU track & field team, and one month later, she proceeded to become the 2004 MAC champion in the discus.

Prior to her stop at Bowling Green, Honegger was a four-year letterwinner at Lafayette Jefferson High School, where she was a first team all-state selection by both the Associated Press and the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sport Association. She earned an Indiana All Star nod after leading the Bronchos to a 17-5 record as a senior while averaging a double-double with 24.4 points and 12. 8 rebounds per game.

"My experience as a two-sport collegiate student-athlete was unforgettable and something I will always cherish. I was blessed to play alongside tough, talented, and selfless teammates throughout my career and would not have been the player I was without them. The strength of our team was the team and we have continued to support each other through life after college.

"I would like to thank my head coach, Curt Miller, for the opportunity of a lifetime in becoming a Falcon and our assistant coaches for their support and guidance. I would also like to thank my track coaches, Scott (Sehmann), Cami (Wells), and Justin (Carvalho) for the opportunity to compete in the ring.

"Last, but certainly not least, we had incredible fan support during my career, but my biggest fans were always my mom and dad. I am forever grateful for the late nights and early mornings they spent driving around the country to see us play. I learned valuable life lessons during my time as a student-athlete at BGSU and I am forever honored to be a Falcon."

Honegger is entering her seventh year as Director of Basketball Operations with the Indiana University women's basketball program in 2018-19. A former Indiana High School All Star, she arrived in Bloomington after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at West Virginia University Institute of Technology. Prior to that, Honegger worked at the high school level as a girls' varsity basketball coach and volunteered for seven years with the high school senior Indiana All-Star team with its preparation for the annual series against the Kentucky All Stars.

Honegger is no stranger to Halls of Fame, having been inducted into the Indiana High School Track and Field Hall of Fame in February 2014. She was a state champion in both shot put and discus during her prep career.
