Chelsee Washington
Washington, a native of Carrollton, Texas (Hebron H.S.), had three goals and seven points as the Falcons opened MAC play with a pair of wins. Washington was directly involved in the scoring of four of BGSU's five goals on the weekend, as she had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win at Miami on Friday (Sept. 21), then scored the first two goals in a 3-0 victory at Ball State two days later.
Washington scored just 1:50 into the Miami match, for the fourth-fastest goal in school history, and she assisted on BG's other goal, in the second half. The assist came when she headed a corner kick onto the boot of redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox near the goal line for an easy finish. In addition to the goal and the assist, she hit the crossbar with another shot in the MU game.
At Ball State, Washington found the back of the net at the 3:09 mark to give the Falcons the lead for good. That goal came on a one-timer from outside the penalty area. Then, with 10 minutes left in the first half, she scored her second goal of the afternoon, with a header off of a corner kick for a 2-0 BGSU lead. In addition to the two goals, Washington hit the woodwork for the second-straight game, as a second-half header rang off the goalpost. And, she saw another shot headed off of the line by a BSU defender for a 'team save.'
On the season, Washington has a team-leading 14 points. She has scored 13 of those points in the last four games, including 12 over the last three matches. And, she has scored the game-winning goal in each of the last three games. She now has three multi-goal matches in her career, including two in the last three contests.
Washington entered last Sunday's Youngstown State match with a total of four career goals, but she has found the back of the net five times in the last three contests. She now has career totals of 27 points on nine goals and nine assists in 49 matches as a Falcon.
Each Tuesday during the college regular season, United Soccer Coaches selects a men's and women's Player of the Week for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and Junior College competition based on nominations from schools and conferences.Â
The Falcons are off to a 2-0-0 start in MAC play for the first time since 2010, and BGSU (4-3-2 overall) returns home for five of the next six matches. BG will host Northern Illinois on Friday night (Sept. 28), with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m., and the Brown and Orange will meet Western Michigan in a 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday (Sept. 30). Admission to all Falcon regular-season home soccer matches is free.
