BGSU Falls To #11 Illinois And UC Irvine In CSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team is now 2-7 in the 2018 season following defeats to No.11 Illinois (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) and UC Irvine (17-25, 24-26, 23-5) on Friday, Sept. 7.

"Despite our two losses, I am very optimistic about our future. We had some very good individual performances in both matches and we've improved offensively. I liked our resiliency in both matches, especially in the last two sets vs. UC Irvine. My belief is that playing some of the best teams in the nation will make us better, stronger and ready for the MAC."
MATCH 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• In the first and third set, the Falcons claimed the first two points of those sets. Back-to-back kills from Isabel Kovacic and Macie Linne put BGSU up 2-0 in the first set, while consecutive service aces from Isabelle Marciniak saw the Falcons temporarily lead in the third set, 2-0.
• The Falcons fought to keep a close score in the first set, down only by one point (13-12) before the Fighting Illini eventually forced the Falcons to trail by five throughout the remainder of the set.
• The Falcons fell just short to Illinois in total attacking attempts (100-98), but 16 attacking errors by the Falcons' offense ultimately influenced the outcome the of the game.
MATCH 1 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Outside hitter Isabel Kovacic led the Falcons in kills (12) and ended the match with a .258 hitting percentage.
• Despite the loss, libero Kallie Seimet still finished with the second highest amount of digs from all players on the court (11).
• Setter Isabelle Marciniak led the Falcons in assists, ending the match with a total of 23.
MATCH 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
• A kill by Madeline Brandewie and a service ace immediately after from Harlee Kekauoha see the Falcons take their first lead of the match, 5-4 in the first set.
• After trailing by as much six points, the Falcons tied the second set (23-23) and forced UC Irvine to call a timeout.
• Halfway through the third set, UCI went on a five-point scoring streak to lead 18-13, before the Falcons responded and narrowed their lead to a 2-point margin, ending the set 25-23.
MATCH 2 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Isabelle Marciniak led the team in assists with a total of 36, while also registering seven digs
• Kallie Seimet nearly doubled her dig tally from the Illinois match (11), and put up 21 digs versus UC Irvine.
• Katelyn Meyer led the team offensively with 15 kills, hitting at .353 against the Anteaters.

• The Falcons remain in Cleveland and take on hosts Cleveland State tomorrow at 1 p.m.
• On Sept. 13, the Falcons return to the Stroh Center to host the BGSU Invitational where they will take on Marshall, IUPUI and Nicholls State.
