BGSU Student-Athletes Leading The Way To Graduation
October 16, 2019 | General
Indianapolis, Ind. - The NCAA released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program today and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. BGSU's 90 percent GSR rate was third in the MAC and ahead of the national average of 88 percent. Thirtenn of the 18 varsity intercollegiate athletics teams had a GSR that ranked among the top half of the league in their respective sport.

Eight of Bowling Green's teams posted a perfect 100 percent GSR. Men's cross country, hockey, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, women's soccer, tennis and volleyball all posted perfect scores.
"Our GSR scores reflect the commitment of our student-athletes to excel in all areas of life," BGSU Director of Athletics Bob Moosbrugger said. "Our coaches and staff support them in their development and we are proud of the efforts made to balance academics and athletics. Our student-athletes are on a path for lifelong success when they reach their academic potential and earn a BGSU degree. We are so proud of the work they continued to do."
Baseball showed the largest one-year increase within the department, moving from 89 percent a year ago to 96 percent in 2019. Women's cross country/track & field moved up five points to 92 percent and men's soccer also climbed five points to 83 percent.
All 18 of BGSU's teams have a GSR that is equal to or ahead of the national graduation success rate for their sport (up from 13 teams a year ago). Women's basketball is 29 points better than the national 71 percent average, while hockey (21 percent), women's cross country/track & field (20 percent), men's soccer (16 percent), gymnastics (15 percent), baseball (13 percent), football (11 percent), women's golf (11 percent), and volleyball (11 percent) all rank at least 10 percentage points ahead of the national rate.
Â
As evidenced by these statistics, BGSU's student-athletes have taken on the challenge of excelling both on the field and in the classroom. In fact, the two areas complement each other and provide a foundation for success across all areas of a student-athlete's experience.
Â
"I am extremely proud to be graduating from BGSU with a bachelor's degree in gerontology," BGSU softball student-athlete Alex Sorgi said. "My time at BGSU has been both challenging and exciting. I have never worked as hard as I have being a student-athlete, and to have achieved success both in the classroom and on the softball field has provided me with a sense of accomplishment and confidence that will carry me through the next phase of my education. I would not have been nearly as successful had it not been for the support of the entire student-athlete services staff."
Â
"Being a student-athlete requires hard work, dedication and commitment," BGSU men's soccer student-athlete Anthony Mwembia said. "I am grateful that Bowling Green State University gave me the opportunity for learning at a high academic level while pursuing soccer in Division I. Graduating from BGSU is an amazing accomplishment that I could not make happen without huge support from our student-athlete services."
Â
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
Â
The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2009-10 through 2012-13 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
