October 24, 2019 | Men's Basketball
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The second annual Boardwalk Battle collegiate basketball tournament will be held at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City this winter during the holiday season. This year's event will be held as a championship format tournament, with each winner from day one battling it out on day two for the Boardwalk Battle Tournament Championship. The four-game tournament will begin on Friday, December 20, and features Drexel vs Quinnipiac, followed by Norfolk State vs. Bowling Green. The tournament festivities conclude on Saturday, December 21 with the third place game preceding the championship matchup. The Boardwalk Battle Tournament Championship and MVP awards will be presented at the conclusion of the second day.
Here's what the coaches are saying:
"Our program is excited to compete in the Boardwalk Battle in December. We're looking forward to the opportunity to match up against tough, well-coached opponents in a great environment in Atlantic City. The tournament will give us a chance to play in Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, which is also the site of this year's MAAC Tournament. This event will help our group continue to grow as we close out our non-conference schedule." – Quinnipiac Head Coach Baker Dunleavy
"We are excited to participate in the Boardwalk Battle. The location is perfect for our fans right before the holiday season. We look forward to the opportunity to play our games against quality opponents who are picked to finish in the top three in their respective leagues on neutral courts. It will be a good experience for our program and for our fan base." – Drexel Head Coach Zach Spiker
"We are extremely excited to compete in this year's Boardwalk Battle! It is an honor to be invited to such an event to compete against other mid-major powers like Quinnipiac, Drexel and Bowling Green. We look forward to our trip to historic Atlantic City!" – Norfolk State Head Coach Robert Jones
"We are very excited about our trip to Atlantic City. Not only will we be able to get Caleb Fields, Daeqwon Plowden and Matiss Kulackovskis home for games, but it will also give us another opportunity to play in a tournament format. With our ties to the East Coast, it will be fun to play neutral site games in front of a great crowd. When we look at our schedule, the Boardwalk Battle is something we are really looking forward to." – BGSU Head Coach Michael Huger

About Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall
Historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall is a multi-purpose facility located on the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk. The facility features a 141,000-square-foot main arena with a capacity of 14,770 seats as well as the 23,100-square-foot Adrian Phillips Theater with a capacity of 3,200. Boardwalk Hall was built in 1929, opening as the Atlantic City Convention Hall. At it's opening, it was considered an architectural masterpiece having what claimed to be the "world's largest clear span space" thanks to its 137 foot-high barrel vault ceiling. Boardwalk Hall has been home to some truly historic events including the nation's first indoor college football game (1930); the first officially titled "Miss America Pageant" in 1940; hosting the Army Air Forces headquarters and training facility during World War II from July 1942 until mid-November, 1945; the 1964 Democratic National Convention, site of Lyndon Johnson's nomination, with 20,000 people in attendance; and the country's first indoor helicopter flight (1970). The United State Register of Historic Places made Boardwalk Hall a National Historic Landmark in 1987. In 1998, the facility underwent a 3-year renovation and emerged in 2001 renamed Boardwalk Hall. The renovation was honored with nine architectural and engineering awards including the 2002 Renovation Project of the Year from Design and Construction Magazine, plus the 2003 National Preservation Award. Since the renovation, it has been a high performing mid-size arena for concerts based on box-office gross revenues. As a sporting venue, Boardwalk Hall previously hosted the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship from 2007 to 2012, and is slated to host the MAAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships in 2020-22.
