Falcons Soar Over Rockets To Take Battle Of I-75 Victory

Toledo, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program competed in a match Friday night (Oct. 25) that lived up to the rivalry's name, winning the Battle of I-75 by a score of 3-1 against the Rockets at Savage Arena. With three of the four sets going to extra points, UT made a strong push, but the Falcons were able to ward off the effort to capture the win. With the victory, the Falcons move to 6-3 in the MAC and 12-9 overall.Â

Play-By-Play Notes
- UT began with a 3-0 run before the Falcons captured their first point of the match. From there the Rocket lead would grow to 6-1 before a BGSU timeout.Â
- Down 17-10, the Falcons used a 5-1 run, capped off by back-to-back service aces by Hanna Laube to bring the score to 18-15 and forcing a timeout by the Rockets.
- Out of the timeout, the Orange and Brown tacked on two more straight points, including another service ace by Laube to bring the score to 18-17.Â
- The score reached even at 23-23, completing a set long comeback for Bowling Green.Â
- The Falcons would utilize extra points to capture the first set win with a service ace by Katie Kidwell sealing the set, her second and team fifth of the set.Â
- The second set began much closer than the first, seeing a tie as deep as 13-13. From there, BGSU used a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead.Â
- The Rockets fought back to tie the set at 24-24, but that would be as close as they would come with Bowling Green taking the next two points to extend their lead to 2-0.
- In the third set, the Falcons jumped out to a 7-1 lead, including a timeout being called by UT.Â
- The Rockets would battle back, bringing the set to 13-13. A long point would end in the favor of Bowling Green to give the lead back to the Falcons.Â
- UT would take the lead at 16-15, but BGSU would immediately tie it back up before the score would swing back to the Orange and Brown, 17-16.Â
- The Rockets would reclaim the lead, 22-20, but the Falcons would retaliate quickly, tying it up at 22-22.Â
- Another set sent to extra points, UT would need a tip by the net to capture the final point of the set to force a fourth.Â
- After beginning down 6-1 in the fourth set, the Falcons went on a 6-1 run of their own to tie the set at 7-7.Â
- Exiting the 7-7 tie, the Rockets went on a 4-0 run to retake the lead, 11-7. However, another 4-0 run, this time by BGSU would tie it all back up at 11-11.Â
- Ties would run deep before the Falcons began to pull away again, seeing the score move to 19-16.Â
- The Falcons would take the final set of the night by a score of 25-22 after a hard fought battle.Â
Strong Individual PerformancesÂ
- A team effort on all ends, 10 of the 13 Falcons to see the court logged at least one dig. Julia Walz led the way with 24 with both Taylor Haberland and Isabelle Marciniak hitting double-digits as well, recording 11 and 10, respectively.
- Marciniak also led the team in assists, notching 32 over the course of the match, marking her eighth double-double of the season for the BGSU senior.
- As for kills, Jacqueline Askin was atop the stat sheet with 18 kills. Katelyn Meyer pitched in 14 kills of her own to the effort.Â
- In the first set, sophomore Hanna Laube recorded three service aces for the Falcons. As a team, Bowling Green logged nine aces over the course of the four sets.Â
- Also with three service aces was Katie Kidwell, also logging three block assists, moving her career total to 300, just four from moving up to ninth all-time.Â
Up Next
- The Falcons will take to the road again on Saturday (Oct. 26), traveling to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State. The Cardinals entered the weekend in a similar spot as the Falcons, holding the same record both in the conference and overall on the season. However, Ball State was swept by Miami, 3-0, on Friday.Â
- BGSU will return to the Stroh Center on Friday, Nov. 1 to take on Kent State followed by Ohio on Nov. 2. Both matches will serve as the second meetings between the Falcons and their foes. In each previous match the Orange and Brown were victorious, beating Ohio in a heated 3-2 comeback win with a Kent State sweep the next day.
- The match against Kent State will be Trick or Treat at the Stroh with the Ohio match being a "Buy One Get One" event, paired with football. Additional details will be made available the week of.Â
