Falcons Ready For RedHawks, Huskies To Close Regular Season
November 12, 2019 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will return to the Stroh Center this weekend to face Miami on Thursday night (Nov. 14) and Northern Illinois Saturday night (Nov. 16). The Falcons will enter the weekend holding a 15-11 record on the season, including a 9-5 MAC standing. The last two weekends, Bowling Green has split their matches, sweeping the last two Saturdays, including a win over Akron to move the Orange and Brown into second place in the MAC East, being favored in the tiebreakers with the Zips. With two matches remaining on the schedule, the Falcons still have a chance to capture a share of the MAC East regular season title.Â
Next Home Match: Bowling Green will return to the Stroh Center on Nov. 14 to take on Miami. Tickets for that match, and all BGSU home matches, can be purchased HERE.Â

Last Time Out
The Falcons began the weekend with a loss to Buffalo on Friday, going four sets with the Bulls with a 3-1 final. Bowling Green took the first set, but Buffalo fought back to take the remaining three played. Buffalo would go on to beat Miami on Saturday night (Nov. 9) as well, keeping the Falcons within range of a share of the MAC East regular season title. On Saturday, the Orange and Brown bounced back from the loss on Friday once again, taking down the Akron Zips with a three-set sweep. The win tied the Falcons and Zips for second in the MAC East, but with tiebreakers, BGSU controls the second spot. On the stat sheet, a team effort led to the win, including nine team blocks, two of which were solos by Lexi Sauber and another four assists.Â
Monitoring Miami
The RedHawks head into Thursday's match with a MAC East leading 11-3 record while being 16-9 overall. The two teams previously met in Oxford on Oct. 10 with Miami coming away with a 3-0 win that sparked nine-match win streak for the RedHawks that ended last Saturday (Nov. 9) with a 3-2 loss to Buffalo. A team approach has proved to be influential for Miami, using a two-setter approach as well as having three players with 200+ digs.Â
Hounding the Huskies
Northern Illinois currently stands at 5-9 within the MAC and 8-20 on the season. The Huskies enter the weekend in the midst of a four-match skid, but will host Western Michigan on Thursday (Nov. 14) before traveling to Bowling Green on Saturday. Like Miami, NIU has used a team approach this season, with two players already over the 200 dig mark with two more less than 15 away along with three 200+ kill hitters.Â
Clinched and Climbing
After claiming a 3-0 sweep over Akron last Saturday, the Falcons not only clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament, but also moved up to second in the MAC East and third overall. Central Michigan slots in at second with a 10-4 MAC record while Miami leads both the East and the conference at 11-3. The Falcons can still tie the RedHawks for a share of the MAC East title, but Miami will control the tiebreaker to have the higher seeding. As for Central Michigan, the Chippewas hold that tiebreaker for seeding, but Bowling Green can still pass them with two wins this weekend and two losses from CMU. Like Bowling Green, both Akron and Ball State hold 9-5 records in the MAC.Â
For the First Time Since …Â
Katelyn Meyer surpassed the 300 kill mark for the season last weekend, becoming the first Falcon to do so since 2016 when Jelena Sunjic totaled 464. Similarly, Jacqueline Askin stands just 17 kills away from joining Meyer in the 300 kills club for the season. If completed, Meyer and Askin would be the first duo for Bowling Green since 2015 to each log 300+ kills in a season when Nicole Slimko joined Sunjic to combine for 726 kills on the season.Â
