November 04, 2019 | Football
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University redshirt freshman Mason Lawler has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the league office today.
As Bowling Green's kickoff specialist, Lawler battled gusting winds and rain in Doyt L. Perry Stadium Saturday to have a stellar day. Along with averaging 50.7 yards on six kickoffs, he made three tackles on special teams.
On the opening play of the game, Lawler's kick was fielded at the Akron one-yard line and he hustled for a tackle assist at the Akron 29. Later in the first, his 59-yard kickoff was returned 33 yards before Lawler made the tackle at the Akron 39.
In the third quarter, Lawler again had a tackle. After his kickoff was fielded at the Akron nine and returned 32 yards, he made his third tackle of the contest. Prior to Saturday's contest, Lawler had just one career tackle.
Bowling Green defeated Akron 35-6 Saturday to improve to 3-6 on the season and 2-3 in MAC play. The Falcons have equaled their win total from a year ago and have guaranteed no worse than a .500 record at home (currently sitting 3-2 in Doyt L. Perry Stadium).
BGSU has 11 days off before playing at MAC East rival Miami Nov. 13 at 8:00 pm. That game will be televised on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
