December 04, 2025 | Football
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green running back/kick returner Cameron Pettaway was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and earned first-team All-MAC honors, joining tight end Jyrin Johnson and linebacker Gideon Lampron on the league's top squad. The three first-team selections headline seven total Falcons recognized with postseason MAC accolades, as announced by Mid-American Conference Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher.
The three first-team All-MAC honorees give BGSU 200 all-time selections in program history, dating back to 1952. Of those 200 first-team awards, 78 have been earned over the past 34 seasons.
Pettaway becomes the fifth Falcon all-time to win MAC Freshman of the Year and the first since Anthon Samuel in 2011. Previous winners also include Kurt Gerling (1998) and Brian McClure (1982).
Joining the trio of Johnson, Lampron and Pettaway on the All-MAC teams are OL Nate Pabst and PK Jackson Kleather on the second team, while CB MJ Cannon and CB Jalen McClendon earned third-team recognition. Bowling Green boasts at least three first-team honorees for the second straight season and has had at least seven players honored in four of the last five years.
Johnson (Sr., Gonzales, La.) led the MAC in a host of statistical categories for tight ends during his lone season on campus. He paced the league in receptions (37), receiving yards (466), yards per catch (12.6), yards after catch (271), contested catches (8), broken tackles (9) and first downs (23). Nationally among tight ends, Johnson ranked top 20 in receptions, receiving yards, yards per catch, YAC, contested catches, broken tackles and first downs. He becomes the fifth BGSU tight end since 2020 to earn first-team All-MAC honors, joining Quintin Morris (2020), Christian Sims (2021), and Harold Fannin Jr. (2023, 2024). Sims earned second-team honors in 2022.
Lampron (Jr., LaGrange, Ohio) is the only player in the nation with 100+ tackles and 15+ tackles for loss, finishing with 119 stops and 17.5 TFLs. He ranks No. 3 nationally in solo tackles (65), No. 3 in TFLs (17.5), and No. 10 in total tackles (119). His 17.5 tackles for loss are the most in the nation by a linebacker.
Pettaway (R-Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) leads the nation in kick return average at 33.0 yards per return, a BGSU single-season record. His first collegiate touch resulted in a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown to open the season against Lafayette. Offensively, he rushed 72 times for 365 yards (5.1 avg) and caught eight passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Pettaway posted a breakout performance against Toledo, catching two passes for 118 yards and two scores as the Falcons erased a 21-0 deficit.
Pabst (Sr., Springdale, Ohio) started all 12 games and served as a team captain. He missed just three offensive snaps all season, logging 766 total between right guard and right tackle. Pabst anchored a veteran offensive line that helped pave the way for redshirt freshman Austyn Dendy, who emerged late in the season to lead BGSU with 493 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns over the final five games.
Kleather (Jr., Tipp City, Ohio) led the MAC with 19 made field goals, tied for 19th nationally. He was the only MAC kicker with at least three made field goals of 50+ yards and tied for No. 2 in the nation with five made field goals from 49 yards or longer. His 19 makes tie Nate Needham (2021) for third-most in a single season in program history.
Cannon (Jr., Evanston, Ill.) totaled 57 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, two sacks and two interceptions. He is one of just four defensive backs nationally with at least six tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions.
McClendon (Sr., Tampa, Fla.), a team captain, collected 56 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1.0 sack and seven pass breakups. He ranked No. 7 in the MAC with nine forced incompletions.
