Volleyball Sweeps Akron, Moves Into Second In MAC East

Akron, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program took to the court in Akron on Saturday night (Nov. 9) en route to sweeping the Zips over three sets to claim the victory. A team effort win moves the Falcons MAC record to 9-5 and 15-11 overall. Including tie-breakers, the Falcons pass the Zips in the MAC East standings for second place, now trailing just Miami who are 11-3 in the MAC. The Falcons and RedHawks will meet at the Stroh Center on Thursday night (Nov. 14).Â

Play-By-Play Notes
- The first set began with the Falcons jumping out in front with a two-point lead for most of the beginning of the match, keeping a cushion on the scoreboard.
- Akron would rally back to tie the set at 11, all. From there, the set would bounce back-and-forth with the Falcons and Zips trading points.Â
- The next multiple-point lead would favor Akron at 15-13, followed by another Zip point and a BGSU timeout at 16-13.
- Out of the timeout, a 3-0 run by Bowling Green would even the score at 16, returning the set to the back-and-forth action.
- The Falcons could claim a two-point lead of their own at 20-18 to force a timeout from the Zips.Â
- The lead for Bowling Green would continue to grow in the set with Akron taking another timeout with the score at 23-19 Falcons.Â
- The Orange and Brown would close out the set with a 25-21 win.
- In just the first set, the Falcons recorded a .400 hitting percentage on the attack.Â
- In the second set, the Zips started with a 4-1 lead, but Bowling Green quickly began to close in.Â
- The first stop in the action would come with a 12-8 score favoring the Zips with a timeout from Bowling Green.Â
- Coming out of the timeout, BGSU captured two straight points before Akron answered. From there, the Falcons used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 13-13.Â
- The set would again go back-and-forth before the Orange and Brown were able to build a lead at 17-15.Â
- Akron would again tie the set at 18 apiece, seeing the set return to trading points before BGSU reclaimed the lead, 21-19.Â
- The lead would roll into a second set victory to extend the Falcons' lead to 2-0.
- Like the second set, the Zips began in front before the Falcons came back behind a 4-0 run to take a 12-10 lead, followed by a timeout from Akron.Â
- Another run for the Falcons would increase the lead, seeing a 3-0 spurt to move the score to 16-13 Bowling Green, forcing Akron to use their final timeout of the set.Â
- The timeout would spark a 4-0 run for the Zips to give them a 17-16 lead. Bowling Green would answer with a timeout of their own.Â
- The score would become tied again at 19-19, beginning another trend of trading points before a 3-0 run would give Akron a 22-20 advantage followed by a Falcon timeout.Â
- The set would tie up again at 24-24, forcing extra points to be needed to settle the score. A challenge on the next point would swing the score to favor the Falcons, 25-24. Bowling Green claimed the next point to clinch the sweep.Â
Strong Individual PerformancesÂ
- Katelyn Meyer led the Falcons on the attack once again, notching 13 kills. Jacqueline Askin pitched in nine while Katie Kidwell had eight. Kidwell also logged two service aces.Â
- With 27 assists, not only did Hanna Laube lead the team, but she also set a season-high, previously at 22. Laube also had a career-high three kills while her two blocks, both assists, was also a season-high.Â
- Julia Walz registered 20 digs on the night, bringing her season total to 517, moving her past Madeline Garda's 2014 total of 513 for ninth on the all-time single season list. The next mark for Walz will be passing the 2006 edition of Chelsey Meek with 537.Â
- Also on the defensive end, Lexi Sauber had a career-high six total blocks with two solo and four assists.Â
Around The MAC
- The win for Bowling Green moves them past Akron in the MAC East standings. Both teams hold a 9-5 MAC record, but Bowling Green takes the tie-breakers, having won four of the seven sets played between the two teams.
- The win also secures a spot in the MAC Tournament for the Falcons.
- With a loss to Buffalo on Saturday (Nov. 9), Miami falls to 11-3 within the MAC. The Falcons and RedHawks meet on Thursday night (Nov. 14).
- In the MAC West, Central Michigan fell to Eastern Michigan and Ohio this weekend, both via sweep, pushing their MAC record to 10-4, still atop the West.Â

- Bowling Green will return to the Stroh Center on Thursday night (Nov. 14) to face Miami with a 6 p.m. start. The match will be Future Falcons Kids Club Night, featuring post-match autographs. Additionally, it will be Greek Night and the Meserve Cup match.Â
- The Orange and Brown will conclude the regular season on Saturday night (Nov. 16), taking on Northern Illinois for a 5 p.m. first serve. The match will be both Senior Night and Frozen Night with one fan winning two tickets to see Frozen 2 in theaters.Â
