2008-09 MAC Champs To Be Recognized Saturday
February 07, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Department of Athletics is proud to announce that the 2008-09 BGSU men's basketball team will be recognized at halftime of Saturday's game against Toledo. The 2008-09 team won the MAC regular season championship and is the only BGSU men's basketball team since 2002 to advance to either the NCAA Tournament or the NIT.Â
The 2008-09 team went 19-14 overall and finished 11-5 in Mid-American Conference play, earning the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament and the league's automatic bid to the NIT. That squad was just 7-6 beginning MAC play and then lost three of its first four conference games. But a contest at Ohio turned the team's fortunes (CLICK HERE for the recap of that game). The Falcons upended Ohio 52-51 for their first road win of the year, a victory that started a six-game conference win streak and a five-game road conference win streak. All six of the wins were by single digits, including a 59-54 victory at Toledo (CLICK HERE for the recap of that game).Â
Bowling Green went into the final game of the regular season needing a win and help to earn the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament. The Falcons opened up a 27-7 lead on Ohio in Anderson Arena and were never threatened in a 75-41 win (CLICK HERE for the recap of that game). Of course, BGSU also got the help it needed.Â
In the MAC Tournament quarterfinals, Bowling Green again dismantled Ohio by a 74-61 victory before a hard-fought 63-55 defeat to Akron in the MAC Tournament semifinals. The Falcons, seeded No. 8 in the NIT, went to No. 1 seed Creighton, a team many thought should have been in the NCAA Tournament, and almost pulled off the upset. The Bluejays pulled out a 73-71 win to end BGSU's season (CLICK HERE for the recap of that game).Â
Louis Orr was named the MAC Coach of the Year in 2008-09 and senior Nate Miller, a MAC Player of the Year candidate, finished as first team all-conference and NABC All-District. The squad was led by seniors Miller, Brian Moten, and Darryl Clements.Â
