Johnson, Gustafson Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week

Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Max Johnson and track and field thrower Aliyah Gustafson.
Male Athlete of the Week
Max Johnson, a sophomore from Lakeville, Minn., had a career best series in Bowling Green's two game sweep of rival Michigan Tech in the quarterfinals of the WCHA playoffs. In a series full of story lines, Max Johnson helped ignite the Falcons' comeback win on Friday (March 8) night with a goal and an assist before exploding for four more points on Saturday (March 9) night. He would record an assist on BG's first goal in the third period of game one, and then score the game-winning power play goal almost two minutes later. Game two (March 9) saw the Huskies take an early lead before the Falcons tied the game on another goal assisted by Johnson. He then scored BGSU's second goal, assisted on their third, then tallied another power play goal in the second period to extend the Falcon lead back to two. This is a career high for Max Johnson in points scored in a single series (6).Â
Female Athlete of the Week
Aliyah Gustafson, a redshirt senior from Iowa City, Iowa, placed seventh in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, advancing to the finals at a national championship meet for the first time in her career and being named First Team All-American for the first time. Gustafson threw the shot put 56-feet-4 (17.17m) to place seventh overall. It was the best result for a BGSU women's indoor track & field student-athlete in 21 years.Â
