SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team hits the road for five games this week, taking on a pair of Michigan schools. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons travel to the Motor City for a Tuesday (April 16) doubleheader against the University of Detroit Mercy. The first pitch of Tuesday's first game is set for 2:00 p.m. at Buysse Ballpark, and the games are scheduled to be streamed via ESPN+.
• Then, the Falcons will return to Mid-American Conference play with a three-game weekend series vs. Western Michigan University. BG battles the Broncos in a Friday (April 19) single game and a Saturday (April 20) twinbill at WMU's Ebert Field.
TOUCH 'EM ALL (FOUR FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE FALCONS)
• The Falcons scored a total of 23 runs in the three-game series vs. Buffalo at Meserve Field last weekend, with double-digit hit totals in each of the three games. Over the last five contests vs. the Bulls, BG has scored a total of 41 times.
• Senior Alex Sorgi hit .563 in last week's four games, going 9-for-16 at the plate. Sorgi was 8-for-12 (.667) in the Buffalo series, with at least two hits in each game. She went 4-for-5 in Saturday's opener, including two hits in the first inning alone and a two-run walk-off single in BG's run-rule win. Sorgi increased her hitting streak to eight games, and she has reached base via hit or walk in each of the last 16 contests.
• Senior Meredith Miller became the fifth pitcher in school history to surpass the 400-strikeout mark for her career. Miller, in just her third year with the Falcons, now has 405 strikeouts in the Orange and Brown. She ranks third school history in strikeouts per seven innings (6.03).
• Another senior, Kali Holcomb, homered in each game of Saturday's (April 13) doubleheader vs. Buffalo. Holcomb banged out five hits in the twinbill, including a double in the nightcap. She has raised her batting average 50 points over her last four games.
ON THE HORIZON
• BGSU has 13 games remaining on the regular-season schedule. Seven of those are conference contests, including this weekend's three-game set at Western Michigan and doubleheaders at home vs. Akron (April 27) and on the road vs. Kent State (May 4).
• The other six games all are against Horizon League foes. In addition to Tuesday's doubleheader at Detroit Mercy, the Falcons will host Wright State (April 23) and Cleveland State (April 30) for two games apiece.
THE OPPONENT
• Detroit Mercy is 19-22 on the year, and the Titans have a 10-5 Horizon League record. UDM has won five of the last six games, including a three-game sweep vs. Cleveland State last week. The Titans split with Central Michigan in a Saturday DH.
• Jorgan Manno is batting a team-high .344, and she also paces the team in hits (44), doubles (11), home runs (five), RBI (25), on-base percentage (.406) and slugging pct. (.563).
• In the circle, Ashley Mauser has a 13-8 record, a 2.21 ERA and 157 strikeouts on the season. Mauser has eight wins in HL play, twice as many as the next-closest pitcher.
• Head coach John Conway's Titans were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League in the preseason coaches' poll.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Detroit Mercy, 43-8, in the all-time series between the teams. BGSU won last year's lone meeting, 8-0 in five innings, as Madison French fired a one-hit shutout in her first collegiate start (April 23, 2018). Prior to that, the teams had not met since 2015, and the Falcons have not visited Buysse Ballpark since 2013 (although the 2015 games were originally scheduled to be played in Detroit before being moved to Meserve Field due to weather and field conditions). BGSU is 24-7 at home, 17-1 on the road and 2-0 at neutral sites vs. the Titans.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the UDM DH, the Falcons will travel to Kalamazoo for a three-game weekend set vs. Western Michigan, including a single game on Friday (April 19) and a doubleheader the following day (April 20).
• Then, the Brown and Orange will begin a six-game homestand with a Tuesday (April 23) twinbill vs. Wright State. The first pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m. at Meserve Field, and admission is free to all home BGSU softball action.
