Seven-Run Sixth Propels Falcons to Tuesday Sweep
April 23, 2019 | Softball
BGSU uses a pair of sixth-inning rallies to capture two games vs. Wright State
All 11 Falcons who had an at-bat in the doubleheader recorded at least one hit, as BG banged out 20 hits as a team. Sophomore Payton Hamm led the way, reaching base five times in seven plate appearances. Hamm had four hits and a walk, and scored three runs in the two games.
Senior Alex Sorgi also scored three runs, and the leadoff hitter had three hits and stole two bases in the doubleheader.
In the circle, seniors Meredith Miller and Brooke Parker each picked up a complete-game win. Parker endured an error-plagued game to earn her victory, as both of the Raiders' runs in the nightcap were unearned.
A SEVEN-RUN SIXTH
• BGSU had at least one hit in every inning of the opener, but the Falcons trailed by a run, 4-3, heading into that pivotal sixth frame. Then, however, the first seven BG batters banged out hits.
• By the time the Raiders recorded the first out of the inning, six runners had crossed the plate, and the Falcons added another run before the inning came to an end.
• BG had eight hits in the sixth inning alone, and the Falcons recorded 15 hits in the game.
SIXTH-INNING SUCCESS
• The Falcons, as mentioned, scored seven times in the sixth inning of Tuesday's first game.
• In the second game, BG again put a crooked number on the board in the sixth frame. The Falcons broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in that inning, taking the lead for good.
• Over the last four games, the Falcons have scored a total of 21 runs. Believe it or not, 16 of those 21 runs have come in the sixth inning.
• On Saturday (April 20), all seven of the Falcons' runs in a doubleheader split at Western Michigan came in the sixth frame, as BG scored four sixth-inning runs in the first game and three more sixth-inning markers in the second.
HAMMERING OUT THE HITS
• Sophomore Payton Hamm has been at the heart of the Falcons' sixth-inning success over the last four games. In the sixth inning of those contests, she is a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI.
• On Saturday at WMU, Hamm capped a four-run inning with a two-out, bases-loaded, bases-clearing double in the first game. That hit gave BG a 4-0 lead en route to a 4-2 win.
• Then, in the nightcap, Hamm delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning, and came around to score. The Falcons had three runs in the sixth inning of that game, but fell to WMU by a 5-3 score.
• Against Wright State on Tuesday, Hamm became the seventh-straight Falcon to bang out a hit in the sixth inning of the opening game, with a run-scoring single to left.
• In Tuesday's second game, Hamm singled in the sixth to score senior Alex Sorgi. That would prove to be the game-winning RBI.
"EASTER'S OVER. NO MORE HAMM, PLEASE." – WRIGHT STATE, PROBABLY
• In three games against Wright State this season, sophomore Payton Hamm batted .600 with a slugging percentage of 1.000 and five runs scored. She had two hits in each of the three games.
• Last month, Hamm went 2-for-4, tying the school record with two triples against the Raiders.
• On Tuesday, as mentioned, the outfielder was 4-for-6 with a walk against WSU. She was 2-for-3 in each contest, scoring twice in the opener while scoring a run and driving in another in the nightcap.
HIT PARADE
• As mentioned, BG banged out 15 hits in the first game, including eight in the sixth inning alone.
• All 11 Falcons who came to the plate in the opening game had at least one hit.Â
TEAM EFFORT
• Nine different Falcons scored a run in the opening game on Tuesday, while six different players had an RBI. Four Falcons – Madi McCoy, Kellie Natham, Alex Sorgi and Kendyl Wheeler – each drove in two runs in the win.
BGSU-WSU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Raiders broke on top early, with two runs in the top of the first. After Meredith Miller struck out Rebekah Lenos to begin the game, the next four WSU batters each singled. Madison Whitaker's base knock, the last of that quartet, plated Brianna Hutchinson with the game's first run, before a Madison Nunez sacrifice fly enabled Madison Hartman to tag and score from third.
• BG got a run right back in the bottom of the first. After WSU started Lexie Hilling retired the first two Falcons, sophomore Payton Hamm banged a single through the right side of the Raiders' infield, and senior Kellie Natham drove a ball over the rightfielder's head for a double, with Hamm scoring ahead of the throw home.
• Back came the visitors, however, scoring a run after being victimized by a pair of stellar defensive plays in the second. First, the defense...
• Sophomore shortstop Sarah Gonzalez robbed Hilling of a hit to begin the inning, diving to stop a hard-hit ball directly behind the second-base bag, then firing to first to get Hilling by a split second. The next batter, Lauren Deitrick, saw her liner grabbed by second baseman Nikki Sorgi just above the ground.
• But, with two outs, Lenos walked and stole second, and the junior would come around to score on Hutchinson's single to the right side.
• The Falcons tied the game in the third. Sophomore Taylor Blevins singled with one out, and Hamm walked to put two runners aboard. A popup produced the second out, but junior Madi McCoy came through with a double to right that scored both runners and made it a 3-3 contest.
• The Raiders missed a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the fourth. Meredith Keel led off with a single, and Hilling walked. Miller struck out Deitrick for the first out, but Lenos then lined a ball past the circle. Her grounder, however, hit pinch-runner Jordyn Poulson on her way from second to third base. Instead of the ball going through the infield and either scoring Poulson or loading the bases, the Raiders had runners at first and second with two outs. And, Hutchinson's grounder was picked up by senior Kellie Natham, who stepped on the first-base bag to retire the side.
• The visitors did indeed get the go-ahead run in the fifth. Hartman singled to begin the inning, then took second on a passed ball. Raidyn Johnson's infield single put runners at the corners, and Johnson took second on Whitaker's groundout to the right side. A Nunez grounder plated Hartman, as the WSU freshman beat the Falcons' throw home. Miller responded by getting a grounder to the circle for the second out, and the senior then struck out Olivia Otani.
• Otani, who had entered the game in the circle to start the fourth inning, retired the first two hitters she faced in the fifth before Natham roped a ball to the wall in right for her second double of the day. The WSU hurler, however, got a ground ball to short to end the threat.
• Miller set down the Raiders in order in the sixth, however, and the Falcons proceeded to put on a hitting clinic in the bottom of the inning.
• Nikki Sorgi led off with a double down the right-field line, and junior Evelyn Loyola's single put runners at the corners. Gonzalez singled to center to score Sorgi with the game-tying run.
• Then, senior Kali Holcomb laced a pinch-hit single up the middle to load the base, before fellow senior Alex Sorgi put a ball through a crowded infield to give BG the lead for good.
• With Sorgi at the plate, the Raiders brought an outfielder into the infield, in effect utilizing five infielders to try and keep the speedy slapper off the basepaths. But, Sorgi knocked a grounder through a tiny hole between two of those five fielders, scoring both Loyola and Gonzalez and giving the Falcons a 6-4 lead.
• Junior Kendyl Wheeler came to the plate and lined a two-run double to left, with both Holcomb and Alex Sorgi coming around to score.
• Hamm followed with a single to put runners at the corners. The Raiders finally got an out as Hamm was forced at second on Natham's grounder, but Wheeler scored on the play to make it a 9-4 game.
• Then, McCoy singled, and after a pitching change, Loyola welcomed Hilling back to the circle with an RBI grounder that capped the scoring.
• Miller retired the first two batters of the seventh inning, and after an infield error and a walk put the next two Raiders on, the senior got Keel to ground a ball back to the circle, leading to the final out of the game.
BGSU-WSU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• While WSU had jumped on top early in the first game, it was BG putting two early runs on the board in game two.
• After senior Brooke Parker had set down the Raiders in the top of the inning, Alex Sorgi beat out a grounder to the right side for a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame. Hamm singled through the left side of the infield, and with McCoy at the plate, Sorgi alertly took off for third on a throw from the catcher back to the circle. BG had runners at the corners, and Sorgi slid home safely on a wild pitch by WSU starter Makenna Durieux.
• An absolute smash off the bat of Natham was grabbed by leaping second baseman Hartman, but Loyola lined a single between third baseman and the bag to score Hamm for a 2-0 BG lead.
• The Raiders responded quickly, aided by a pair of BG errors. Whitaker walked to begin the second inning, and Nunez reached on an infield error before Keel's single loaded the bases with no outs.
• Then, Madison Mills lifted a ball to left. Whitaker tagged and scored on the play, and everyone – including Mills – was ruled safe on the play. The Falcons argued that leftfielder Hamm had dropped the ball while transferring it from her glove to her throwing hand, in an attempt to quickly throw home, but he umpires ruled that Mills was safe, and the bases were still loaded with no outs and a run home.
• Macy McCall's grounder was grabbed by third baseman Madeline Dyer, who fired home for a force play and the first out of the inning. Then, Parker struck out Lenos on three pitches. But, Hutchinson was safe on a dribbler to the right side as the tying run scored. Hartman's fly ball to left-center was tracked down by centerfielder Alex Sorgi for the third out.
• While BG had a hit in every inning of the opening game, the Falcons went for a lengthy stretch without a hit in the nightcap. After allowing three hits in the first inning, Durieux then proceeded to retire 13-straight batters. The home team did not have another hit until the sixth.
• Meanwhile, the Raiders had baserunners for much of the game, but did not score again after the second inning. Whitaker singled in the third inning, and the visitors loaded the bases with just one out in the fourth.
• That fourth frame saw Mills reach on an error and McCall and Hutchinson each draw a walk. With one out, Hartman's liner was caught by Dyer near the third-base bag. Then, Parker got Johnson to hit a grounder to Nikki Sorgi at second, and the soph fired to first for the third out.
• In the fifth, Whitaker reached on an infield error, and Nunez singled, with both runners taking an extra base on an outfield miscue. Then, Keel's infield single loaded the bases, as the runners were forced to hold on the play.
• But, Parker struck out Mills, then McCall, and a Lenos grounder was gobbled up by Nikki Sorgi, who flipped the ball to shortstop Gonzalez for an inning-ending force at second.
• When Hutchinson walked to begin the sixth, it marked the fourth time in the game and the third-straight inning that the WSU leadoff batter had reached base. But, Parker responded by getting Hartman to swing and miss at an 0-2 pitch (after four consecutive foul balls), and Johnson hit a fly ball to right for the second out. Whitaker's bouncer back to the circle resulted in out number three.
• For the fourth consecutive game, the Falcons put a crooked number on the board in the sixth. Alex Sorgi led off with an infield single, ending that Durieux streak of 13 consecutive hitters retired. Sorgi stole second, before Hamm singled to left. Sorgi scored on the play, with Hamm advancing to second base on the throw home.
• The Falcons had a 3-2 lead, and BG would tack on an insurance run. McCoy's grounder moved pinch-runner Blevins to third, before Natham's liner to center enabled Blevins to tag and score easily.
• With a two-run lead to work with, Parker got Nunez to hit a soft liner directly at Blevins in left, and Keel popped up the very next pitch. Parker grabbed the ball herself for the second out.
• Mills followed with a single to right-center, but when she attempted to stretch it into a double, rightfielder Holcomb threw a strike to Gonzalez, and the ball reached second well before the runner. Gonzalez applied the tag that ended the game and gave the Falcons the sweep.
