SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team wraps up the home portion of the Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons face the University of Akron in a Saturday (April 27) doubleheader at Meserve Field. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will conclude the home schedule with a Tuesday (April 30) double-dip vs. Cleveland State University. Game one is slated to get underway at 3:00 p.m at Meserve. Admission is free to all BGSU home softball action.
IT'S ALL NORTHEAST OHIO, ALL THE TIME
• The Falcons' final six regular-season games all are against Northeast Ohio-based schools, and BGSU is hoping to enjoy enough success in those six games to be able to continue the season in Northeast Ohio.
• BGSU has four MAC games remaining, with two vs. Akron on Saturday and two at Kent State a week later (May 4). The Falcons are looking to finish eighth or better in the final standings, as the top-eight schools will converge upon Firestone Stadium in Akron for the MAC Tournament, which runs from May 8-11.
PROMOTIONS / EVENTS
• Saturday is Senior Day for the BGSU program (see below). It is also the annual pink game, with fans encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The first 50 fans will receive pink sunglasses.
• And, it is also Spirit Teams Day, as the Falcons will be recognizing the spirit teams across campus (Falcon Marching Band, cheerleaders, dance team, mascots, SICSIC and spirit skaters) for all they do for BGSU.
TOUCH 'EM ALL (FOUR FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE FALCONS)
• Saturday will be Senior Day at Meserve Field, with the seniors in the BGSU softball program recognized in ceremonies prior to the first game. That seven-member senior class includes Kali Holcomb, Meredith Miller, Kellie Natham, Brooke Parker, Kathleen Shier, Alex Sorgi and Kiley Sosby.
• The Falcons began the sixth inning with seven-straight hits, scoring seven times in the frame, en route to a 10-4 victory over Wright State on Tuesday (April 23) at Meserve Field. BG used another sixth-inning rally in game two to capture a 4-2 win and a sweep of the twinbill.
• All 11 Falcons who had an at-bat in the WSU DH recorded at least one hit, as the Brown and Orange banged out 20 hits as a team. Sophomore Payton Hamm led the way, reaching base five times (four hits and a walk) in seven plate appearances.
• Hamm enters the Akron DH on a six-game hitting streak, with five multiple-hit games in that time. She is 11-for-19 (.579) at the plate during that span.
SORGI SETS THE TABLE
• Senior Alex Sorgi scored three runs in the Wright State doubleheader, and the speedy centerfielder had three hits and stole two bases in the two games.
• Sorgi is hitting .407 (22-for-54) in the month of April. On the season, she is hitting .323 with an on-base percentage of .400. In MAC games only, the leadoff hitter is batting .373 with a .456 OBP.
SETTING THE TABLE, PART II
• BGSU's leadoff hitter has reached base 39.2 percent of the time this season (121 times in 309 opportunities). The leadoff batter has gotten on base at least three times in 26 of this season's 46 contests.
SIXTH-INNING SUCCESS
• The Falcons, as mentioned, scored seven times in the sixth inning of Tuesday's first game vs. Wright State, and BG again put a crooked number on the board in the sixth inning of game two as well, breaking a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in that frame.
• Over the last four games, the Falcons have scored a total of 21 runs. Believe it or not, 16 of those 21 runs have come in the sixth inning.
• On Saturday (April 20), all seven of the Falcons' runs in a doubleheader split at Western Michigan came in the sixth frame, as BG scored four sixth-inning runs in the first game and three more sixth-inning markers in the second.
HAMMERING OUT THE HITS
• Sophomore Payton Hamm has been at the heart of the Falcons' sixth-inning success over the last four games. In the sixth inning of those contests, she is a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI.
• On Saturday at WMU, Hamm capped a four-run inning with a two-out, bases-loaded, bases-clearing double in the first game. That hit gave BG a 4-0 lead en route to a 4-2 win.
• Then, in the nightcap, Hamm delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning, and came around to score. The Falcons had three runs in the sixth inning of that game, but fell to WMU by a 5-3 final.
• Against Wright State on Tuesday, Hamm became the seventh-straight Falcon to bang out a hit in the sixth inning of the first game, with a run-scoring single to left.
• In Tuesday's second game, Hamm singled in the sixth to score senior Alex Sorgi. That would prove to be the game-winning RBI.
TEAM EFFORT
• Nine different Falcons scored a run in the opening game on Tuesday, while six different players had an RBI. Four Falcons – Madi McCoy, Kellie Natham, Alex Sorgi and Kendyl Wheeler – each drove in two runs in the win.
RECORD WATCH
• Senior Alex Sorgi is one of several Falcons ranked on numerous career lists. Sorgi is second in school history with 68 career stolen bases, and will end her career in that spot, behind BG Hall-of-Famer Amy Lienhardt (121 steals from 1985-88).
• Sorgi is ranked sixth in BGSU history with 116 runs scored, and is currently ninth in career batting average (.314). She is tied for ninth on the school list with 61 walks, and deadlocked for 14th in career hits (163).
Â
• Seniors Kali Holcomb (seven, T-fourth) and Kellie Natham (six, T-seventh) are ranked in the top-10 on the BG career chart for sacrifice flies, and sophomore Sarah Gonzalez (four) has moved into a tie for 10th place on that list.
• Senior pitchers Meredith Miller and Brooke Parker are ranked on numerous BG lists as well. Miller is third in school history in strikeouts per seven innings (6.09), and has moved into fifth place in total strikeouts (431). She is seventh in complete games, tied for seventh in wins, and eighth in games started and innings pitched.
• Parker is 10th in appearances, and she is tied for sixth in career saves. Parker is now 11th in innings pitched and 12th in both games started and strikeouts.
• Fellow senior Kiley Sosby is ranked 16th in career strikeouts.
THE OPPONENTS
• Akron is 12-27-2 overall, and the Zips are 2-14 in MAC play. UA is coming off of a sweep of Robert Morris on Tuesday, having scored a total of 17 runs in the two wins.
• Sydney Jascoe has a team-high .396 batting average, and leads the Zips with nine homers and 26 RBI. Kayla Wulf is batting .350 with 23 RBI. Five different players have at least 12 stolen bases as UA has a total of 106 thefts as a team.
• In the circle, Adrian Smith leads the team with eight wins and a 4.67 ERA. Smith has started 24 of UA's 41 games this season, and has 98 strikeouts in 120 innings.
• Head coach Julie Jones and the Zips went 4-43-1 overall and 3-21-0 in the MAC a year ago. Jones returned 11 letterwinners from the 2018 squad.
• Cleveland State is 12-30 on the year, and the Vikings are 5-13 in Horizon League play, heading into a three-game weekend series vs. Wright State. CSU played three one-run games at Oakland earlier this week, winning the first before dropping a pair of extra-inning contests.
• Kelly Hysong and Riley Ries are hitting .327 and .320, respectively. Hysong has 10 of CSU's 18 homers, and she and Ries have combined for 49 of the team's 117 RBI.
• In the circle, Hysong is 6-11 with a team-low 3.88 ERA, while Hanna Griffin is 6-15 with a 4.42 ERA. Hysong and Griffin have started a total of 38 of the team's 42 games.
• Amy Kyler, the top pitcher in CSU history, is in her first year as head coach of her alma mater after 11 years at Notre Dame College. Kyler was an assistant coach under Leigh Ross at BGSU from 1998-2001.
• CSU finished the 2018 season with a 15-34 overall mark and a 5-17 league ledger.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Akron, 56-28-1, in the all-time series between the teams, and BG captured three narrow decisions on the road last season. Two years ago, UA won two games at Meserve Field before BG picked up an 8-2 win in the final game of the series. The Falcons are 21-15-1 at home, 27-12 on the road and 8-1 in neutral site meetings with the Zips since the dawn of time.
• The Falcons lead Cleveland State, 21-8, in that series, and BG has won two-straight games, including a 10-3 victory at the CSU Dome Tournament last February. CSU has not visited Meserve Field since the 2004 season. The Falcons are 11-3 at home and 10-5 on the road vs. the Vikings over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the Cleveland State DH, the Falcons will wrap up the regular-season schedule with a doubleheader at Kent State on Saturday, May 4. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Diamond at Dix.
• Then, the top-eight teams in the final regular-season standings will advance to the MAC Tournament. The four-day event begins on Wednesday, May 8, at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
