Scott Miller Selected By Tampa Bay In NFL Draft
April 27, 2019 | Football
Nashville, Tenn. – Bowling Green State University wide receiver Scott Miller has been selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. A three-time All-MAC player, Miller will go down as one of the greatest wide receivers in BGSU history.
As a true freshman, Miller was a member of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championship team, playing in the final 10 games of the season on special teams and at wide receiver. He had seven catches for 29 yards in that initial season and returned 24 kickoffs for 457 yards. He added one reception in the GoDaddy Bowl against Georgia Southern.
Miller broke out as a sophomore in 2016, leading BGSU with 74 catches for 968 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was 25th in the country in TD receptions and 24th in receptions per game. He twice had three touchdowns in a game and recorded four 100-yard contests, posting 1,323 all-purpose yards as the team's primary kick returner as well.
After being named first team All-MAC in 2016, Miller again led the team in receptions and yards in 2017 with 63 catches for 722 yards. He added two more 100-yard games, including 10 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown against Buffalo.
Miller's senior season was one of the best in the country as he finished seventh nationally in receiving yards per game and 18th in receptions per game. He finished with 71 catches for 1,148 yards and ended his career with 215 catches, tied for third-most in school history, and 2,867 receiving yards, also third in program history. Fittingly, the final play of Miller's college career was a 63-yard touchdown reception.
Beating the odds at every turn, Miller graduated from Barrington High School in Barrington, Ill. and had just one scholarship offer from a Football Bowl Series (FBS) program – Bowling Green. He was a state champion in track and field and posted 1,500 receiving yards in his final two high school seasons.
While he was one of the fastest players in this year's NFL Draft, he was not invited to the NFL combine or any of the top-tier all-star game despite totaling 26 receptions for 294 yards and three touchdowns against Oregon, Maryland and Georgia Tech in 2018.
"I am beyond grateful to BGSU for giving me the opportunity to play at the Division I level when no one else would," Miller said. "I have grown so much as a player at Bowling Green. I couldn't have done it without my coaches and teammates along the way. I still have a lot of work to do and a huge chip on my shoulder. Go Bucs!"
Miller becomes the fourth wide receiver from that 2015 MAC Championship team to get a shot in the NFL. Roger Lewis (Tennessee Titans), Gehrig Dieter (Kansas City Chiefs) and Teo Redding (Green Bay Packers) are currently with NFL teams. Lewis and Dieter have combined to play in 32 career NFL games.
Miller is the first Bowling Green player to be selected in the NFL Draft since Chris Jones was also picked in the sixth round in 2013. He is the 67th BGSU Falcon to be drafted since Max Minnich was picked in 1949. Bowling Green has had two first round selections – Bob Zimpfer in 1960 and Bernie Casey in 1961.
