Volleyball Celebrates 2018 Season With Banquet And Awards

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program held its 2018-19 banquet on Sunday (April 28) evening where the team distributed team awards, including receiving their 2018 MAC Champions rings, a feat achieved for a second consecutive season. The team accomplished their second of back-to-back regular season MAC Championships for just the second time in program history, with the Falcons doing the same in both 1991 and 1992. In addition, the team played host to the MAC Player of the Year, MAC Defensive Player of the Year, eight Academic All-MAC recipients for the second straight year and three members of the All-MAC First Team. On Sunday, nine members of the team were awarded the eight team awards, as well as the team's Supporters of the Year along with listening to keynote speaker, Stephanie Swiger.

For the second consecutive year, senior Madeline Brandewie collected three awards voted on by her teammates, the Love Award, the Unity Award and the Communication Award. Over the course of the 2018 season, Brandewie appeared in all 31 of the Falcons' matches, was featured on the BGSU Invitational All-Tournament Team and earned Academic All-MAC recognition. Brandewie logged the second most blocks on the team with 79, including a season high six in the 3-0 win over Miami on Nov. 1.
Fellow senior Kallie Seimet was also presented multiple awards, being given the Excellence Award and the Hard Work Award. Seimet recorded a record breaking season for the Falcons in 2018, becoming BGSU's all-time leader in digs with 2,365. Additionally, Seimet was the first player in MAC history to be named back-to-back MAC Player of the Year and MAC Defensive Player of the Year. The MVP of the BGSU Invitational Tournament, Seimet earned a spot on the Duquesne All-Tournament Team while being named First Team All-MAC and Academic All-MAC.
The Competitiveness Award was presented to sophomore Katie Kidwell, who ranked No. 86 in the NCAA for total blocks. Kidwell earned a spot on the First Team All-MAC and was named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15. In addition, Kidwell logged 22 service aces from the back line during the season.
Named in honor of the first coach in Bowling Green volleyball history, the Pat Peterson Academic Award was presented to Paulina Iacobelli and Victoria Iacobelli, both sustaining 3.91 GPAs. Paulina appeared in all 31 matches for Bowling Green, playing in 101 sets en route to registering 21 service aces and being named Academic All-MAC. Victoria, unfortunately, missed the 2018 season due to injury.
For the second consecutive year, redshirt sophomore Macie Linne was given the Outstanding Community Service Award for her contributions throughout the community and volunteerism, logging 45 hours. Linne appeared in 10 matches for BGSU, playing in 26 sets. She recorded 50 kills on the season, including a career best 12 against UNLV.
The volleyball program also presented the William J. Lloyd Supporters of the Year award to Dr. Lee and Marge Meserve for the support of the team. Dr. Meserve began teaching at BGSU in 1973, holding many roles over his 44 years including being a Faculty Athletic Representative. Dr. Lee and Marge Meserve endowed the Meserve Scholarship, given to BGSU's Senior Male and Senior Female Student-Athletes of the Year as well as having the BGSU softball fields named after them.

A 2008 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Swiger was a four year starter for the Falcons, serving as team captain during her senior campaign. Swiger held many other roles during her time at Bowling Green, leading her to become a current member of the Alumna Board of Directors. Those countless roles included President of the BGSU Student-Athletes Advisory Committee (SAAC), Chair of the Mid-American Conference SAAC, and a three year member of the NCAA Division I National SAAC.
Swiger's College Honors and Athletic Accomplishments
After graduating from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in 2011, Swiger now serves as an Assistant Attorney General for the Education Section in the Ohio Attorney General's Office in Columbus, a role she has held since 2017.
