July 22, 2019 | Volleyball
LEXINGTON, Ky.- For the 19th consecutive season, the Bowling Green State University volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the AVCA Team Academic Award.
In being named, BGSU maintains the status of being one of four programs in Division I to be recognized for a minimum of 15 straight years. Of the four, three programs compete in the Mid-American Conference.
The 2018-19 award marks the 20th time in the program's 25-year history that the Falcons have been named for academic excellence by the AVCA. The award is presented to volleyball programs across the country that hold a cumulative team GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale. In 2019, the award was given to 1,125 teams, breaking the all-time record yet again, including 189 Division I women's programs.Â
The BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.600 cumulative GPA with a total of 17 of the team's 18 student-athletes earning a 3.0 grade point average or higher during the fall semester, while 17 also maintained a 3.0 or higher during the spring semester. During the 2018-19 school year, three Falcons maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, including Victoria Iacobelli, Hanna Laube and Kerstie Shaw.
Being named for the 19th consecutive season, Bowling Green continues one of the longest active streaks among all NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Only Indiana State University has been recognized annually for a longer period of time having been honored for 21 consecutive years. The AVCA began the award for the 1992-93 season.Â
