BGSU Draws at Duquesne in Opening Match of Season

Chris Sullivan scores for the Falcons in Friday's double-OT contest
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team opened the 2019 regular-season schedule with a 1-1 draw at Duquesne Friday (Aug. 30) night. The non-conference match was held at Rooney Field.
Junior Chris Sullivan scored for the Falcons in the 7th minute on an unassisted goal for the first score of the 2019 campaign. BG led in the shots department in the first half at 8-7. Sullivan and Chris Brennan led the Falcons in total shots with five apiece with Sullivan firing twice on goal and Brennan once.Â
Zach Hall scored the equalizer for the Dukes in the 57th minute to even the match at one. Hall was assisted by Manel Busquets.Â
BGSU senior goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia, who played every minute of the 2018 season, was in goal for all 110 minutes of the match and recorded four saves. Mwembia's counterpart, Duquesne goalkeeper Robbie McKelvey, had six saves on the night.Â

NOTES AND NUMBERS
- BG was ahead in the shots category at 20-15 and also led in shots on goal 7-6. Duquesne and BG were tied in corner kicks with both teams recording five.Â
- Freshman Colin Iverson made his first collegiate start tonight in his first collegiate game posting 47 minutes played with a shot on goal. Fellow freshman Eli Shope also made his collegiate debut coming in as a substitute playing 50 minutes and recording one shot.Â
- Sullivan's 7th-minute strike is his 5th career goal. Sullivan scored seven points last season, tying him for the team lead among BG returning players
- Along with Mwembia, Zach Buescher, Jensen Lukacsko, Kale Nichols and Achille Robin each played all 110 minutes in the double OT contest.Â
- Duquesne outnumbered BG in the fouls category by a mark of 19-9, although BG received a pair of yellow cards during the match. Â
- The Falcons are now 8-1-2 in regular season openers with head coach Eric Nichols at the helm.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Falcons will continue their road trip in Pittsburgh as they will face Robert Morris Sunday at 1 p.m. The Colonials lost to Oakland 5-1 earlier on Friday to fall to 0-1-0 on the season.Â
