NOTES FOR MEET ONE
BGSU VS. EMU
Bowling Green is 27-24 all-time against Eastern Michigan, which is the second-most wins for the Falcon program against any opponent (BGSU has 28 wins all-time against Western Michigan).Â
Interestingly, this will be the third consecutive year in which BGSU and EMU will compete in Anderson Arena. A year ago, the meet was scheduled for Ypsilanti but cold weather conditions forced it to be moved to Bowling Green. Eastern Michigan came away with a 194.150-193.975 victory. The Falcons last defeated the Eagles in 2018, a 195.025-193.950 win. BGSU is 20-5 all-time at home against Eastern Michigan.
Â
NEW-LOOK FALCONS
Bowling Green fans may be hard-pressed to recognize the lineups when the Falcons open competition Saturday. As many as three freshmen could be in the lineup and those newcomers could all be on multiple events. Along with those freshmen, veterans such as Samantha Marion and Alex Fochler could see increased roles. While Jovannah East is the top returner in each of the four lineups, Elena Lawson (9.688 on vault, 9.627 on floor and 9.369 on bars) and Jasmine Jones (9.505 on beam) will also provide a steadying influence.
GETTING OFF TO A GOOD START
A year ago, Bowling Green struggled out of the gate, scoring 189.675 in a quad meet at Alabama. Conversely, the Falcons scored 194.000 two years ago to win at Michigan State to open the 2018 season. The program record score for a season-opening meet was 194.825 to open the 2001 season with a pair of home victories over Kent State and Illinois-Chicago.
EAST'S OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jovannah East will go down as one of the greatest gymnasts in BGSU history. Just the second gymnast to qualify for the NCAA National Championships, East has put together a remarkable career through her first three years. East's career accomplishments include the following:
Three-time First Team All-MAC (2017, 2018, 2019)
Two-time Academic All-MAC (2018, 2019)
MAC Vault Co-Champion (2018)
MAC Beam Co-Champion (2019)
MAC All-Tournament Team (2017, 2018, 2019)
MAC Freshman of the Year (2017)
NCAA Regionals Qualifier (2017, 2018, 2019)
NCAA Nationals Qualifier (2018)
MAC Gymnast of the Week (2x in 2018, 2x in 2019)
MAC Specialist of the Week (2017)
BLUE RIBBONS
Collegiate gymnastics teams across the country, including Bowling Green, will be wearing blue ribbons during meets this weekend to honor the life of gymnast Melanie Coleman, who passed away in November, and in support of Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics.Â
