Zips Rally to Win a Thriller at the Stroh, 76-73
January 11, 2020 | Women's Basketball
All five BG starters score in double digits in Saturday's setback
A furious fourth-quarter comeback lifted the University of Akron to a 76-73 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 11) at the Stroh Center.
With the win, the Zips improve to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
The Falcons (7-8, 0-3 MAC) saw all five starters score in double digits for the second time this season. Sophomore Kadie Hempfling led the way with 15 points, while junior Angela Perry had 13.
On her birthday, junior Madisen Parker scored 12 points and had a team- and career-high 10 rebounds. Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson added 11 points and junior Mari Hill 10.
But, Haliegh Reinohl and Caitlin Vari each had double-doubles for the Zips. Reinoehl had a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Vari scored 14 points and pulled down a game-best 16 boards.
The Zips scored the game's final 14 points, taking the lead on a Shaunay Edmonds steal and layup with 15.3 seconds to go. Edmonds poked the ball away from a BG player from behind, took a pass from Shayna Harmon and hit the go-ahead layup.
Â
A BG shot was off the mark, and Harmon grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 6.5 seconds to go. She hit both free throws, and a long three-point try by the Falcons hit the back iron and bounced away as the horn sounded.
FIRST QUARTER
• A back-and-forth first period featured three lead changes, as each team shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening 10 minutes.
• Akron's Haliegh Reinoehl scored 10 of her team's 20 points, while Angela Perry (seven) and Madisen Parker (six) combined for 13 of BG's 19 in the period.
• Perry scored the game's first for points, and a Parker three-pointer gave the Brown and Orange a 9-5 lead with four minutes gone.
• BG led by a 15-10 score after freshman Elissa Brett's defensive rebound and long outlet pass to classmate Kaillie Hall for a layup, but back-to-back triples gave the Zips a one-point lead.
• Perry stepped outside the arc to give the Falcons a three-point edge with 1:41 left in the period, but UA sandwiched a pair of buckets around a Hall free throw, with Caitlin Vari's last-second layup putting the Zips up, 20-19, after one period.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Zips began the second period on a 10-3 run, with a Reinoehl transition layup giving UA a 30-22 lead. The teams traded hoops before a Mari Hill layup began a 7-0 run that tied the game. Caterrion Thompson followed Hill's bucket with a three-point play, and Brett's charity tosses tied the score at 32 midway through the quarter.
• UA's Shayna Harmon knocked down two shots at the stripe, but BG then scored six of the final eight points of the half. A Thompson triple with just over 16 seconds on the clock broke a tie game and gave BG a 38-35 lead at the break.
• That Thompson trey capped a 13-3 Falcon run to conclude the quarter.
• BG held the Zips to just 4-for-16 shooting from the field (25.0%), including a 1-for-8 performance from the arc, in that second quarter. The Falcons shot 40% from the floor and 42.9% from downtown in the period.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Falcons came out hot in the third period. Hill's layup on the opening possession began a 10-0 run to begin the quarter. Thompson and Parker each connected from long distance, and sophomore Kadie Hempfling's layup gave the home team a 48-35 lead.
• Reinoehl's three-pointer stopped that run, and after Brett answered with a hoop, Akron proceeded to score the next seven points. Alyssa Clay's corner three cut the BG lead to five, 52-47, with eighty seconds left in the quarter.
• Hempfling and Hill, however, scored back-to-back buckets before a UA jumper cut the Falcons' advantage to seven after three periods of play.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Layups by Vari and Jordyn Dawson narrowed the BG lead to 56-53 within the first minute of the quarter, but moments later, Hill and Hempfling each scored to restore a seven-point margin for the hosts.
• Brett's layup at the 5:57 mark made it an eight-point game, and after UA whittled the lead to give, Hempfling's triple began a 6-0 run. Hempfling's charity tosses with 2:42 remaining put BG ahead by a 73-62 count.
• But, the Falcons would not score again. Vari converted two three-point plays within a minute's time, and Reinoehl split a pair of free throws with 1:10 to go. When Harmon hit a three-pointer with approximately 37 seconds remaining, UA was within a single point.
• On the next possession, Akron's Shaunay Edmonds poked the ball away from a BG player from behind, with the ball going to Harmon. Harmon fired it to Edmonds ahead of the pack for what proved to be the winning points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• BGSU outshot Akron, with a 44.1% field-goal percentage to the Zips' 40.6% rate. Both teams hit eight three-pointers, although it took BG 22 attempts (36.4%) and UA 27 (29.6%) to do so.
• The Zips had a narrow 41-38 rebounding advantage, and Akron went 12-for-15 at the free-throw line to BG's 13-of-24.
• As mentioned, all five BGSU starters scored in double figures for the second time this season.
