SETTING THE SCENE...
• The latest chapter of the "Battle of I-75" will be written this weekend, as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team heads to Lucas County for a Saturday (Jan. 18) matchup with the University of Toledo. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons will face the Rockets in a 2:00 p.m. matchup at Savage Arena.
THE STARTING FIVE (FIVE SOMEWHAT FASCINATING FALCON FACTS)
• The Falcons are coming off of a third-straight narrow loss. After falling to Ball State in overtime (Jan. 8), BGSU dropped a 76-73 decision against Akron on Saturday (Jan. 11), before losing a 65-59 contest at Buffalo on Wednesday (Jan. 15).
• A pair of former teammates will be on opposing sides of the BG-UT rivalry on Saturday. BGSU junior Mari Hill and Toledo's Nakiah Black were teammates at Tallahassee Community College in 2017-18, as the Eagles went 29-6 overall and became the lowest seed (No. 11) ever to win the NJCAA Division I National Championship.Â
• BGSU head coach Robyn Fralick has coached on both sides of the BG-UT rivalry. Fralick (then Robyn Flewelling) was an assistant coach on head coach Mark Ehlen's Toledo staff in 2007-08.
• Junior Madisen Parker hit four three-point field goals on Wednesday in Buffalo, giving her 56 successful triples this season and 101 in her BGSU career. Parker is just six treys shy of moving into a tie for 18th place on the school's career list.
• Parker has made at least one three-point field goal in each of BGSU's 16 games this season to date. She leads the entire nation in three-point field goal percentage, and is also ranked sixth or better in the land in total three-pointers made as well as triples per game.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE ROCKETS
• Toledo is 8-7 overall, and the Rockets are off to a 3-1 start in MAC play. UT opened league action with a loss at Western Michigan, but the Rockets have since reeled off wins over Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Akron. Most recently, UT withstood a big UA comeback for a 65-61 win Wednesday night.
• UT is 4-3 at home, 3-3 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites.
• Nakiah Black leads the team with 11.5 points per game, while Tanaya Beacham and Mariella Santucci have 9.5 and 9.3 ppg, respectively. Santucci leads the club in both rebounding (6.2 rpg) and assists (4.6 apg).
• Head coach Tricia Cullop returned nine letterwinners, including two starters, from last year's team. The 2018-19 Rockets finished with records of 21-12 overall and 11-7 in the MAC, and UT advanced to the WNIT.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Toledo, 42-36, in the all-time series, but the Rockets have won the last seven matchups, including a 79-65 decision at the Stroh Center and a 76-56 victory at Savage Arena in last year's two meetings. UT has won 11 of the last 13 games after BGSU had captured the previous 12 series meetings. BG is 20-13 in home games, 14-20 on the road and 8-3 in neutral-site meet-and-greets with Toledo over the years. Much more series information can be found on page 13 of the PDF version of these notes.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Toledo tilt, the Falcons will return home to face Western Michigan on Wednesday (Jan. 22), with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
• Then, BGSU closes the month of January with a matchup vs. MAC East Division preseason favorite Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 25. That contest begins at 1:00 p.m. in Athens.
