BGSU turns defense into offense in exhibition win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Seven players scored in double digits as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team rolled to a 114-35 win over the College of Wooster Friday night (Oct. 24), in an exhibition game at the Stroh Center.
The Falcons forced the Fighting Scots into 42 turnovers on the night, and BGSU had a 64-0 lead in points off turnovers. BG also enjoyed a 64-6 lead in points in the paint.
Taya Ellis led all players in both scoring and rebounding, with 19 points and 12 boards. Ellis went 8-for-10 from the floor, while Kendal Moxey was 6-for-7 from the field, en route to 15 points. Moxey added seven rebounds in just under 12 minutes of  action.
Johnea Donahue and Paige Kohler each had 13 points, with Laila Harrison and Jasmine Fearne scoring 11 apiece and Jaedyn Cook chipping in with 10.
Emily Siesel led BGSU in both assists and steals. The senior had six assists and just one turnover, and had eight of the Falcons' 33 total steals.
Donahue had eight rebounds and seven steals, with Harrison coming up with five steals.
Ky'Aira Miller had five assists and three steals in the win, and Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick had nine points and five boards.
Sofia Moschen scored five points, with Miller adding four and Siesel three.
BGSU shot over 51 percent from the floor, going 40-for-78, while holding the Scots to just a 22.7% success rate (10-for-44).
FIRST QUARTER
• BGSU got out of the gates quickly, scoring the game's first 17 points. Donahue and Ellis combined to score the first nine, and a Kohler three-pointer gave BG a 12-0 lead and prompted a Wooster timeout with just 2:30 gone.
• Donahue scored seven points in that 17-0 run, including a putback to cap that surge. Wooster got on the board on a pull-up jumper by Ace Sturdivant nearly halfway through the period.
• The Scots got within 10 points on a Graysen Redpath three-pointer, but BG then ended the quarter on a 13-0 run. Kohler's jumper in the final minute of the period gave the Falcons a 34-11 lead.
• Ellis had 12 points to singlehandedly outscore the visitors in the period, adding  seven rebounds, while Donahue had nine points in the first 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• The run grew to 15-0 as Bland-Fitzpatrick opened the period with a layup, and after Sturdivant knocked down a three-pointer, Moxey's layup began a 9-0 run that gave the Falcons a 45-14 lead at the media timeout.
• Moschen hit three-point shots on back-to-back BG possessions, and the Falcons continued to pull away. When Bland-Fitzpatrick grabbed an offensive rebound and found Siesel for a long-range make, the score was 57-16. BG took a 59-20 advantage into the half.
• Ellis had a double-double in the first half, with 17 points and 11 boards.
THIRD QUARTER
• BGSU scored the first 13 points of the second half, with a Donahue steal and layup making it a 72-20 game midway through the third quarter.
• The lead grew to 57 as BG scored the final seven points of the period, capped by two Miller free throws and a driving layup by Harrison.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Fearne's three-pointer opened the fourth quarter scoring and gave the Orange and Brown a 60-point advantage. BG scored the first 13 points of the final period, with two Moxey free throws capping an overall 20-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters.
• Fearne scored 11 points in the final period, with Moxey scoring 10 on 4-for-4 shooting. Harrison and Siesel each had four steals in the fourth quarter alone.
• As a team, BG had 20 steals in the second half.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons open the regular-season schedule on Monday, Nov. 3, as BGSU takes on Louisiana. The game, part of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Cajundome in Lafayette, La.
• That is the first of six-straight games away from home for the Orange and Brown. After trips to meet South Carolina (Nov. 7), Wisconsin (Nov. 12) and Marquette (Nov. 14), BG will play a pair of games in the Great Alaska Shootout (Nov. 21-22).
• The Falcons regular-season home opener is set for Sunday, Nov. 30, when Purdue Fort Wayne comes to the Stroh Center for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
