BGSU Hall Of Famer Chuck Winters Inducted Into IMLCA Hall Of Fame
January 03, 2020 | General, Hall of Fame
Baltimore, Md. - Bowling Green State University Athletics Hall of Fame member Chuck Winters was recently inducted into the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame in a ceremony held on Dec. 6.
Winters was a 1969 Bowling Green graduate and a 2004 BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee. He was also inducted into the Ohio Lacrosse Association Hall of Fame in 2000 and received the Lifetime Service Award from USILA in 2007.
A three-year letterwinner at BGSU, Winters originally came to Bowling Green to play football. He had 17 goals as a senior and was an honorable mention All-American as the Falcons went 11-1. He also served as a co-captain.
Winters went on to a successful coaching career, while also serving as the secretary-rules editor of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Rules Committee. He was the athletics director at Gettysburg College from 1989 until retiring in 2002. He went 94-55 with a pair of national championships (1973, 1975) at SUNY Cortland from 1973-83. He also spent time as an assistant and associate athletics director at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
In his induction speech, Winters had this to say about his coach at BGSU and another Athletics Hall of Famer, Mickey Cochrane.
"During my playing career and graduate assistant coaching experience under Mickey Cochrane at Bowling Green I was able to observe how he came to the Midwest from Johns Hopkins University in the mid 60's and developed a top notch program from scratch. I wouldn't be standing in front of you tonight if it wasn't for Mickey and Pat Cochrane. They were like parents to me for the six wonderful years I spent at Bowling Green. They would have the team come to their home every night before a home game. We would discuss the upcoming opponent, watch his kids drop cookies and brownies as they crisscrossed through 35 bodies sitting and lying on the living room floor. These evenings always ended with Mick reading us a poem he had prepared about the team we were to play the next day. Through this experience with Mickey, Pat, Kevin and Cathy I came to understand it is possible for a college coach to teach many valuable lessons off the field, cherish the relationships he has with his players and show how it is to have a strong commitment to family."

Winters was one of six inductees this year. Joining the former Winters in the Hall were Don Leet (St. Lawrence University), Tom Postel (C.W. Post), William Schmeisser (Johns Hopkins University), Cliff Stevenson (Oberlin College, Brown University), and Dick Watts (Kenyon College, University of Maryland, Baltimore County).
