December 07, 2020 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Medical Mutual Athletes of the Week, as selected by the strategic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are basketball players Justin Turner and Lexi Fleming.
Male Athlete of the Week
Justin Turner, a senior from Detroit, Mich., led Bowling Green to a 3-0 week by averaging 25.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Turner shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the floor while going a ridiculous 27-of-28 (96.4 percent) from the free throw line. The Detroit native opened the week with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting in an overtime win at Appalachian State. A few days later, in a win over Purdue Northwest, Turner finished with 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and zero turnovers. He closed the week with the seventh 30-plus point game of his career. In a MAC-opening win over Buffalo, Turner scored a Stroh Center career high of 33 points. He scored 13 of BGSU's last 14 points to guide the Orange and Brown to an 86-78 victory.
Female Athlete of the Week
Lexi Fleming, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, had a team-high 16.5 points per game last week, as the Falcons won two games to improve to 3-0 on the season. Fleming also had 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game as BGSU downed Northern Kentucky on the road and Milwaukee at the Stroh Center. On Thursday at NKU, Fleming scored 11 points and added three steals in the Falcons' 63-49 victory. Then, on Sunday, she scored more than 20 points for the second time in as many home games, with a game-high 22 points in the win over previously unbeaten Milwaukee. Fleming led the Falcons with six rebounds, tied for the team lead with three assists and added two more steals in Sunday's win. She had a steal and a layup in the final seconds of the third quarter to give the Falcons a five-point lead. Then, after the Panthers had rallied back to take a five-point lead with just over two minutes to go, Fleming drew an offensive foul on the Panthers, then found Kadie Hempfling for a three-pointer that began a game-ending 7-0 run. Fleming was fouled and hit a pair of free throws with 17.3 seconds remaining to give BGSU a one-point lead.
