AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Akron, 74-59, Tuesday (Feb. 11) evening. The Mid-American Conference contest was played inside of UA's James A. Rhodes Arena. Despite the loss, BGSU remains all alone in first place in the MAC.
Bowling Green drops to 18-7 (9-3 MAC) with the loss, while Akron improves to 18-6 (8-3 MAC). With just six games remaining, the Falcons hold a half-game lead over the Zips for first place in the conference. Every other team in the league has at least four MAC losses.
UA took advantage of a massive discrepancy at the free throw line, as the Zips went 21-of-27 from the charity stripe. The Falcons shot just 11 free throws, making five. Paint points were nearly dead even, with the Zips holding a 34-32 advantage.
The Falcons trailed by just one point with less than 13 minutes to play, but Akron closed the game on a 29-15 run. Loren Cristian Jackson led the Zips with 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting.
Daeqwon Plowden posted his eighth double-double of the season, as he finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner added 12 points and three assists. Sophomore center Tayler Mattos had seven points and six rebounds, while freshman guard Davin Zeigler contributed with five points and four assists.
