Vie, Gottshall Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week

Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's golfer Rodrigue Vie and softball player Payton Gottshall.

Male Athlete of the Week

Rodrigue Vie, a junior from Epinal, France, went 3-0 in match play at the Earl Yestingmeier Match Play Tournament in Dade City, Fla. this week. Vie, who was one of just two golfers to card two eagles over the course of the tournament, defeated competitors from Drake, Xavier and Ball State as the Falcons went 2-1 as a team at the event. None of Vie's matches went the entire 18 holes and he had a team-high nine birdies. Vie defeated his opponent from Drake by a score of 2&1 and then had the largest Falcon victory of the event, a 7&6 win over Xavier. He closed with a 3&2 win over Ball State.

Female Athlete of the Week

Payton Gottshall, a freshman from Massillon, Ohio, had a stellar first weekend as a Falcon. In her collegiate debut, she threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 17 batters in seven innings as the Falcons topped Tennessee Tech. Gottshall faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing one hit and one walk. She struck out nine consecutive hitters at one point in the game. BGSU single-game records are incomplete, but no Falcon pitcher has struck out more than 17 batters in a game since at least 1995. Gottshall also picked up a win in relief against the host school at the Chattanooga Challenge, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings of work. She struck out nine batters in that win. Gottshall allowed a combined three earned runs in 11 innings in her other two games, but the BG offense was shut out in both contests. On the weekend, Gottshall had a 1.75 ERA and allowed opponents to hit just .179 against her. She had a WHIP of 1.08.
