Falcons Top Valparaiso For First Road Win Of The Season

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University tennis program came away with a 6-1 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday (Feb. 21) to move the Falcons to 2-2 in the young season. The Falcons began the day with wins on all three courts of doubles play, rolling that momentum into five wins on the singles courts as well. For Bowling Green, the win marks the first on the road of the season and gets them back to .500 through the first four matches. Next up on the schedule will be a home match against Indiana Tech this coming Friday (Feb. 26). The match is set for a 12:30 p.m. start at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.

Making Of The Match
- Beginning in doubles play, the Falcons saw a clean sweep across the three courts, winning on all of them. The duo of Marta Bettinelli and Selina Karg highlighted the groups, winning the set in straight points for the 6-0 score.
- The duos of Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Yulia Kapitanova as well as Ioanna Tsadari and Ayumi Sasaki also claimed doubles wins to round out the sweep and give the Falcons the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
- In singles play, the Falcons claimed another five points, including four Falcons not losing a set. At No. 5 singles, Karg allowed her opponent just one point on the day, winning 6-0 and 6-1. Sasaki wasn't far behind with 6-1 finals in both sets at No. 4 singles.
- Bowling Green also saw Tsadari and Tavpash pick up wins in just two sets. Tsadari saw a 6-3 final in the first set followed by 6-4 in the second to claim the point. As for Tavpash, she took home a hard fought first set with a 7-6 (2) final and then closed the door in the second set at 6-1.
- The final point of the day for the Orange and Brown came at No. 3 singles from Kapitanova. Taking the first set 6-1, Kapitanova saw Valparaiso's Amanda Tabanera battle back to take the second set. However, Kapitanova dominated the third to claim another point for the Falcons.
Falcon Stat Facts
- With wins in both singles and doubles, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash moved up the singles all-time wins list while gaining ground in doubles and combined as well. For singles, Tavpash picked up her first singles win of the season and now has 57 career singles wins, tying her for 25th all-time with Jenny Cheung. As for doubles, Tavpash now has 78 career wins, needing just one more to tie her former doubles partner, Paula Comella, for sixth all-time. In combined wins, Tavpash now has 135, coming closer to 14th all-time, needing four more wins to reach it.
- For fellow senior Ayumi Sasaki, the two wins she tallied on the day moved her into a tie for 29th all-time on the combined wins list with 104, being tied with Andrea Meister and Tisa Pacella. Sasaki is also currently 28th all-time for singles wins with 55 and needs just one more doubles win to crack the Top 30 all-time.
- Tallying her first career win at No. 5 singles, freshman Selina Karg continued a strong start to her collegiate career, now 3-0 in singles play this season. While this was her first No. 5 singles win, she had previously tallied two No. 6 singles victories.
