April 19, 2021 | General, Sports Medicine
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – For his outstanding leadership and dedicated commitment to BGSU student-athletes and the University, Dan Fischer, assistant AD for sports medicine, has been named the 2021 Michael R. Ferrari Award winner.
Known around the department for his genuine personality, passion and work ethic, Fischer, for over a decade at BGSU, has continued to go the extra mile for his student-athletes and co-workers.
"During a period that has challenged each of us as never before, Dan has consistently delivered on the qualities of exceptional performance and a genuine sensitivity to others by showing an open, caring attitude," said BGSU Director of Athletics Bob Moosbrugger. "Dan embodies what Dr. Ferrari stood for and has stood out during our most challenging year ever."
The Dr. Michael R. Ferrari Award, presented to a member of the Administrative Staff, was authorized by the Board of Trustees in 1982 to honor Dr. Ferrari, who served as interim president during 1981-82. During his tenure at Bowling Green State University, Dr. Ferrari faced adversities and challenges similar to those riddling the state of Ohio today, and his words, drawn from a lifetime of experiences in higher education, are guaranteed to inspire.
In addition to overseeing BGSU sports medicine and serving on the athletic department's senior staff, Fischer, who came to Bowling Green in 2010, works directly with the men's hockey and women's hockey programs. Fischer is also the insurance coordinator of all 18 BGSU Varsity programs. Fischer, who received his Master's Degree in Sport Administration from Bowling Green in May of 2009, is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), as well as, the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society (PHATS).
WHAT THE ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT SAYS ABOUT FISCHER
"Dan Fischer is honestly one of the greatest people I have ever worked with over my career! There is no one more deserving of this incredible honor. Fisch is first-class in everything he does. I cannot thank him enough for how much he's contributed to our program's success and for the outstanding leadership he's given our entire athletic department. On behalf of both Coach Fahey and myself, congratulations and well deserved!" – Stephanie Young, Head Women's Golf Coach
"I have had the privilege of working with Dan for the past 11 years. Since day one, he has gone above and beyond to do whatever is needed for our student-athletes and staff. Over this past year Dan's commitment to all student-athletes, staff and BGSU was outstanding. Everyone in the Athletics Department has relied on Dan in some way to get through this pandemic and I honestly cannot think of a person who is more deserving of this award!" – Ty Eigner, Head Hockey Coach
"Dan Fischer exemplifies BGSU Sports Medicine. He is a selfless servant to the department and to the student-athlete. There is no individual who has put more time and effort into making sports possible this year than Dan. I have learned so much from him and I aspire to be like him every day. It is a true honor to be a member of his staff and to work for such a special individual day in and day out." – Rob Whitehurst, Associate Athletic Trainer (Men's Basketball, Men's Golf)
"Dan has taken every curveball thrown at him this year and completely crushed it. Prior to 2020, he was always the person I went to when I needed advice because I knew he would tell me the truth and help me continue to grow as a professional. Now that he has handled this pandemic, I have a completely new and deepened respect for him. He deserves all the recognition and then some." – Dani Coppes, Head Football Athletic Trainer
"First off, I'd like to congratulate Dan on this award! He provides great leadership to our department. His dedication to our student athlete's well-being is unparalleled." – David Florea, Assistant Athletic Trainer (Football, Tennis)
"Working with Dan has been rewarding for me. I can easily see the passion that he has for providing the best all-around care for not only all the student athletes at BGSU, but for all of his Sports Medicine staff as well. This past year has been a challenge for everyone, but Dan has made the best of it and is a valued colleague that I know I can go to with any questions or issues I may have, at just about any time, day or night." – Matt St. Louis, Assistant Athletic Trainer (Women's Basketball, Swim & Dive)
