Hawks survive late barrage of BG shots to move on
BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team saw the season come to an end on Thursday evening (April 29), as the Falcons fell, 2-1, to Monmouth University in the first round of the NCAA Championships. The match was held at Bryan Park.
Nathan Masters scored to give the Falcons (7-5-1 [5-2-1 MAC]) the lead late in the first half, but the Hawks equalized in the 57th minute, then took a 2-1 lead with just 8:02 to go.
Logan Kowalczyk made three saves in goal for the Falcons. Monmouth's Sean Murray made six saves on the night, including three in the final 45 seconds as the Falcons peppered him with shots until the very end.
BGSU put three shots on goal with under a minute to go. Vinny Worner hit a shot with approximately 45 seconds remaining that forced Murray to tip it over the crossbar. The Falcons quickly took a corner kick, and Achille Robin's header off of that kick also was parried by Murray.
The ball eventually went over the end line for another BGSU corner, and Zach Buescher's kick found the head of Robin. Robin rose above his would-be defender to put the ball on frame, but the hard shot was hit directly at Murray, who gratefully made the save as the final seconds ticked away.
The Falcons held advantages in shot attempts (13-10), shots on goal (7-6) and corners (8-3). Monmouth was whistled for seven fouls to BGSU's four, and the Hawks doubled up the Falcons in cautions, with four yellow cards to the Falcons' two.
GOALS / KEY MOMENTS
• 5' | With just 4:08 gone, Kyle Cusimano was flattened by a Monmouth player, and the Hawks received the first of those four yellow cards on the evening. Chris Sullivan's free kick found the head of Achille Robin in the box, and Robin put his shot toward the lower-left corner of the goal, but MU goalkeeper Sean Murray made a diving save to tip the ball wide of the post.
• 5' | Off of the ensuing corner kick, Nathan Masters headed the ball back across the box, and it was knocked out for another BGSU corner. MU was able to successfully deal with that BG corner.
• 9' | Jacob Erlandson headed a Monmouth cross away for a corner kick, and then off of the corner, Erlandson headed that ball out of danger as well.
• 12' | MU's Julian Gomez got behind the BGSU defense as the assistant referee's flag stayed down. Gomez poked the ball past charging goalkeeper Logan Kowalczyk and tried to quickly get a shot off, but his roller was well off line.
• 15' | Masters and Cusimano worked a combination play, but Masters' cross was grabbed out of the air by Murray.
• 16' | a long throw-in by Joey Akponuno was headed out for another BGSU corner kick. Zach Buescher took that kick, and slid a short pass to Akpononu, who put a diagonal ball into the box. Erlandson met the ball with a header, but his flick-on was stopped by the MU defense.
• 17' | A Buescher throw-in also found the head of Erlandson, who played the ball across the box to Masters. Masters hit a gorgeous half volley, but the spectacular shot was blocked.
• 21' | Vinny Worner's pressure in the offensive end won the Falcons a throw-in, and off of that throw, BG won a corner kick. Soon after that kick, Sullivan played a ball toward the box, and Kale Nichols headed the ball on frame, but Murray made the save near the far post.
• 24' | Cusimano found Sullivan with a pass, and Sullivan's diagonal ball was just out of reach of a sliding Masters in the box.
• 25' | The Hawks looked to counter, but Liam McGregor shot high from outside of the 18.
• 27' | Nichols won a corner kick, and off of that kick, an Erlandson shot was blocked. The Hawks looked to counter quickly, but Cusimano and Akpunonu helped to break up that attempt, and the Falcons won a goal kick.
• 34' | Sullivan was fouled yet again, and another Hawk received a yellow card with 11:36 left in the half. Thte ensuing free kick by Sullivan was headed by Akpunonu, but his shot went wide.
• 38' | A long ball by Kowalczyk was headed by Worner to Masters. Masters played a ball through the MU defense to Roberto Fernandez Garrido, but the play was whistled offside.
• 39' | The Hawks had a good scoring chance off of a low left-side cross, but a shot by Sebastian Rodriguez was blocked by a lunging Erlandson for a 'team save' on the left side of the six-yard box. Off of the ensuing corner kick, MU's Luke McBeth played the ball into the box, but Kowalczyk grabbed it.
• 43' | GOAL | The Falcons took the lead with 2:50 left in the half. Off of a left-side cross, Fernandez Garrido won the ball from a defender and hit a hard shot that forced Murray into a quick reaction save. Fernandez Garrido was first to the rebound on the right side of the six-yard box extended. He hit a quick cross into the center of the area, and Masters hit a quick one-timer out of the air and into the net.
• 43' | BGSU got the ball right back, and Nichols fired a shot just 20 seconds after the goal, but the effort was blocked.
• 45' | With under 40 seconds to go before halftime, Fernandez Garrido laid the ball into the path of Jensen Lukacsko, who hit a hard shot from just outside the box. The ball was deflected out for a corner kick. BG quickly took that corner, and Sullivan's kick found the head of Erlandson, but his shot was off the mark.
• 46' | Pressure by Cusimano deep in the MU end led to a Sullivan steal, but as Sullivan blocked the ball into the path of Cusimano, BG was ruled offside.
• 47' | The Hawks saw a good chance materialize, but it evaporated just as quickly as Ben Zakowski duffed his shot attempt, and the ball rolled over the end line, well wide of his intended target.
• 48' | Kowalczyk grabbed a cross from Zakowski, just before a lurking Julian Gomez could arrive at the far post.
• 53' | Sullivan's cross was played down by Worner, into the path of Cusimano, but Cusimano's shot went just over the bar.
• 56' | Gomez stole the ball in the BG end, but Akpunonu blocked his crossing attempt out for a corner kick.
• 57' | GOAL | Off of that corner, though, the Hawks tied the score. Gomez scored for the sixth-straight game, heading the ball home off of the set piece.
• 58' | MU had gained some momentum with the goal, and off of a Zakowski cross, Gomez headed the ball back across the box. But, a Rodriguez shot was blocked by Kowalczyk at close range.
• 73' | After a long stretch of possession for the Falcons, Lukacsko played the ball ahead to Akpunonu, but his right-side cross was headed out.
• 74' | Sullivan found the onrushing Erlandson on the left side of the field. Erlandson cut back to his right and hit a shot, but the ball was saved.
• 78' | A pass put McGregor behind the defense, but Kowalczyk made a diving save at the top of the 18. The Monmouth bench argued for the next several minutes, claiming that a free kick should have been awarded due to a BG handball, but replay showed that Kowalczyk was inside the penalty area when he blocked the shot.
• 82' | GOAL | Jonas Lindner gave the Hawks the lead, taking a pass from Zakowski and hitting a hard shot that went just under the crossbar with 8:02 on the clock.
• 89' | Akpunonu played an attractive diagonal ball, but it went through the box and out for a goal kick with just over 1:30 remaining.
• 90' | With 45 seconds left in the match, Worner hit a hard, curving shot from the top of the box on the left side, forcing Murray into a leaping save. The MU GK tipped the ball over the bar.
• 90' | BGSU quickly took a corner kick from the left side, and Robin got his head on the ball, flicking it on frame. Murray somehow made a reaction save, and after the ball bounced around the right side of the penalty area for several seconds, it was knocked out for another corner.
• 90' | Buescher took that kick, from the right side, with just under 10 seconds to go. Robin rose above all other players and headed the ball on target, but the hard shot was hit directly at Murray, who made the save and held onto the ball as the final seconds ticked away.
