Volleyball Falcons look to build upon epic 2020-21 campaign
Bowling Green State University volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced her team's schedule for the 2021 season. The defending Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament champions will play a 28-match regular-season slate that includes 10 contests inside the friendly confines of the Stroh Center.
"First of all, we are thrilled to announce our 2021 schedule in anticipation of the upcoming season," said Tomic, the reigning MAC and AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year. "This might be the most challenging non-conference schedule during my tenure at BGSU.
"I believe this is necessary for our program to take the next step towards becoming one of the top 25 programs in the nation. We will be tested against very strong competition, which will help our development and prepare us for a demanding MAC schedule."
The non-conference schedule will see the Falcons participate in tournaments hosted by Butler, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. BGSU will play three matches in each of those weekend tourneys, and the nine opponents include four teams that -- like the Falcons -- advanced to the NCAA Tournament in April. Those four teams include BYU, High Point, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, and that quartet along with UIC combined to post a record of 82-15 last season.
BG will open the regular season at Butler's Top Dawg Challenge (Aug. 27-28), facing UIC, Indiana and the Bulldogs inside historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The next weekend (Sept. 3-5) will see the Brown and Orange meet Notre Dame, Milwaukee and Cincinnati in South Bend, and BGSU's final tournament will pit the Falcons against BYU, High Point and host Pittsburgh the following weekend (Sept. 10-11).
The conference schedule will feature two matches apiece against Akron, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami and Ohio, and the Falcons will face Ball State, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan once each.
BG will host UB (Oct. 1-2), EMU (Oct. 22-23) and KSU (Nov. 5-6) for two-game weekend series at the Stroh Center, and the Falcons will travel to Akron (Sept. 24-25), CMU (Oct. 15-16) and Ohio (Nov. 12-13) for two-game sets.
The Falcons will meet Miami in a home-and-home series, with BGSU traveling to Oxford for an Oct. 20 matchup and the RedHawks coming to the Stroh to close the regular-season schedule on Nov. 17.
BGSU will host NIU (Oct. 8) and WMU (Oct. 9), with the latter contest being a rematch of last season's MAC Tournament Championship, won by the Falcons at the Stroh Center. The Brown and Orange will take to the road to face BSU (Oct. 29) and UT (Oct. 30).
BGSU's lone non-conference home match will also be the home opener, as the Falcons face Oakland on Sept. 19. A home exhibition match vs. Gannon (Aug. 22) will be the first opportunity for Falcon fans to see the 2021 team in action.

The Stroh Center is set to be back to 100% capacity this season for all sports, including the BGSU Volleyball season!
"The BGSU Division of Health and Wellness continues to monitor national, statewide, and local COVID-19 trends. We're glad to see the continual increase in vaccinations and decreases in cases. We are so proud of how our BGSU student-athletes found a way forward last year and we're happy to be able to open all athletic facilities to full capacity to cheer them on," said Chief Health Officer Ben Batey.
